I had a great car (Chevrlot Trailblazer which was suited for Newark). Be aware of the toll roads and know the rules.

Double check your choice of car and time for pick-up and drop-off. Impression is the staff is not flexible if not exactly what has been reserved.

If you don’t worry to save $20-40 so much, just rent from companies that are attached to the airport!

Pick up of vehicle involves riding a train and a 10 minute walk. This is very inconvenient with luggage and almost impossible if you have a more than 2 pieces person.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Newark
Newark, New Jersey is a short drive to many other states including New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. If you rent a car, you’ll be able to see so much more while on vacation. Spend a day or two in New York City then make a day trip to New Canaan, Connecticut to tour the Glass House or Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for some casino fun.
Flying into Newark offers easy access to numerous cities including Trenton, Long Island, Hoboken, and New York City. At Newark Liberty International Airport you’ll find it easy to rent a car. Depending upon what company you use, you can get to the hire desk at Station P2 or P3.
During your stay, you’ll find yourself frequenting the New Jersey Turnpike to get to numerous destinations including Hackensack and Ridgefield Park. Nevertheless, the turnpike can get really busy. If traveling north on the turnpike, consider taking the I-295 instead. It will be less hectic and lets you avoid the tolls, plus you can also get back on the turnpike from here if needed.

FAQs about renting a car in Newark
What type of car is recommended for driving in Newark?
Newark enjoys four distinct seasons – winter, spring, summer, and fall. So if you are visiting for the Christmas or New Year’s holiday, you might experience lots of snow. Therefore, an SUV might be best to get you through the snowy conditions. Other times of the year, a smart or compact car might be best when visiting Newark because of parking limitations. Simply put, a smaller car can more easily fit into a tight parking spot on the street.
What’s the speed limit in Newark?
The speed limit is 65 mph on both the Garden State Parkway and the NJ Turnpike. However, if you are traveling through residential neighborhoods, New Jersey law requires that you slow down to 25-35 mph, depending upon the zoning. Around the downtown area the speed limit is 30 mph. Watch for signs to avoid getting a speeding ticket.
Where are the best places to park in Newark?
Because downtown Newark can be so busy, parking can be difficult to find. If you know when you are going to be in the area, you can reserve your space in a parking garage or lot ahead of time. This can be done through a variety of mobile apps like SpotHero or Parking Panda.

On one of the busiest holiday weekends (12/27), at one of the busiest airports in the nation (Newarl) there were 12 desks available to help Budget customers, and only one of them was staffed with a human being. The wait to pick up the rental car was 2 hours. Never again, Budget.

Kate and Lexus were very good with me and made my experience great. I would highly commend them to if possible to the company as they provide great service.
Reserved, specifically, a luxury vehicle to fit four people and two suitcases in the trunk. At arrival, as given the choice of two of the exact same vehicles, Genesis G70s, which are COMPACT sports sedans. Only one of our suitcases fit in the tiny trunk so my sons, ages 17 and 20, had to ride in the back seat with the other suitcase between them. Not comfortable. And not easy to get seat belts buckled, either. The car was very clean and drove well but I don't feel I actually received what I paid for.

Alamo did not allow me to get a car because they won’t take anything but credit card bookings. This should have been made clear at the offset. We spent money, time and resources to get to Newark to be disappointed. Missed our connections afterwards and everything that was planned after had to be cancelled. Super disappointing.
Kayak allowed me to book the rental car and charged me for the insurance right away yet when I arrived in Newark after paying $220 for an Uber from LaGuardia at three in the morning, I was told “I cannot honor that reservation“ since it wasn’t made 24 hours in advance. I was left with no rental car an expensive Uber ride to where I thought there was a car since my reservation was confirmed and was left with no way to get a car. It seems like this process shouldn’t have allowed that to happen.

Newark rental experience was awesome. Unfortunately my rental was supposed to be picked up at Laguardia airport, and the Hertz team from LaGuardia is about the most disrespectful you could have find anywhere in the USA. They forced me to get an Uber and made me go to Newark to pick up the rental over a technicality that I was not responsible for. I spent 3 hours in the whole process, and I experienced the worse level of customer service at an airport’s Hertz rental location there at LaGuardia. Needless to say, I’m not using Hertz car rental services ever again… Sincerely, Tony Zapata.

Great but as I drove away I realized the car was not clean, Fingerprints all over the touchscreen crumbs on the floorand there was leftover food items in the back seat floor.
Good - Easy pickup and dropoff. Could be better - Agent assigned a vehicle that was no available. The parking attendant reassigned another vehicle but it took some time and the model was different.

Despite providing both Kayak and Sixt my flight arrival time into EWR, the Sixt rental counter desk was closed and I was unable to retrieve the car I had reserved and pre-paid. Fortunately, the other major rental car brand desks were open and I rented elsewhere. Thus far Sixt has resisted refunding their $400+ charge. Rent from Sixt in the US at your own risk.

Avoid at all costs! I received a scratched up car and was assured it was fine by the agents. I was not provided a paper receipt when requested and now Sixt is trying to hold me accountable for a smudge (not even a scratch) on the cover of a mirror. Garbage rental car company.
They added a $51.43 charge after the fact to my card because I declined to use their insurance while using my own like I have always done. They said because my policy was not zero deductible (who’s is?) that I had to be charged. They also said this was in the rental agreement which I didn’t see until I picked up the car because I rented and pre-paid through a third party. Of the hundreds of cars that I have rented all over the world I have never had this happened. Stay away from these guys. It’s an off/site shady operation. Their facilities in Newark are a hassle to get to and they are pretty scummy. They don’t even have a bathroom for their customers.

They overcharged me for geo fence and that was not mentioned at the time of booking. You all should better job of mentioning this on booking rather than adding in somewhere in term and condition. Your credit card requirements are ridiculous. If you want this stupid system, have a way to check the credit card before the customer shows up. Requiring credit cards that have chips with the person's name who booked the car is strange. It cost us money, time and anxiety. Will ensure to not book work you or Hertz again.

I was charged an extra $80 on arrival that I was not told about by Kayak. Please can I understand why I was not informed of these charges in advance?
The gas tank was not filled all the way and when I pointed it out to the attendant he claimed that it was…. It was a little more than 3/4 full and he didn’t want to deal with it. Will not be using this company again.
Priceless is a small business run out of an off-site parking lot. I booked the day before my trip and when I landed was texted instructions how to get a claim number and a shuttle to phone. The shuttle was prompt and it took me to a small lot with a shack that had the rental key. Once I picked it up, the car was new, clean and otherwise what you'd expect. Return was similar getting a return claim from the shack, calling the agency and telling them my miles, then getting on the shuttle.
