What type of car is recommended for driving in Cancún?Your best option is a plain economy car, as they fit into all parking lots, can cruise through the city without taking up too much space, and are less likely to get stolen compared to a luxury BMW or Mercedes. In Mexico, car theft or damage is still fairly common, so also make sure to get insurance with your hire car. Good traction is also something you want to have in your hire car, as road conditions can be challenging in some parts.
Always check the speed limit signs, but general regulations allow between 30 and 70 kph in residential areas (18 to 43 mph), 90 kph in rural, non-residential areas (56 mph) and up to 110 kph on freeways (68 mph).
It is advisable to opt for a hotel with parking included if you are traveling with a hire car, as it will provide a safe parking space. Otherwise, there are public parking lots like the free Playa Caracol, the Estacionamiento, or Playa las Perlas. Public street parking is also available but is limited in the hotel zone, and this designated area is known to be on the safe side.
In the past 72 hours, the cheapest car hires were found at MEXRENTACAR (AED 53/day), America Car Rental (AED 54/day) and Firefly (AED 64/day). In the last 72 hours the cheapest rental car price was found at MEXRENTACAR Aeropuerto Intl. de Cancún null (14 kilometers from city center).
The average price of fuel in Cancún is AED 19.72 per litre over the past 30 days. Filling up a tank of fuel costs between AED 237 and AED 315, depending on the car size.

Pros:
Car was goodCons:
Pick up and drop off was very slow, line was long. At drop off they made you wait in the same line to return the car as the people waiting in line to pick up the car. Car return took 30 minutes. Also Kayak did not make Car insurance policies clear, and staff at Alamo were very aggressive at pushing their Insurance options. Their arguments with customers about insurance was one of the things slowing down the pickup/drop off line.2.0 Poor

Nothing. They did not have a car even though we booked one. We had to change our entire travel plans because of that. Horrible.Cons:

Pros:
The staff was friendly.Cons:
The car was terrible. It was completely beat up with significant dents on every panel. The right side mirror did not work. The battery connection was loose and the car didn’t start on multiple occasions. The tires had a slow leak. The car price as quoted should include the mandatory cost of insurance for non Mexicans and not just say it’s extra.2.0 Poor

Pros:
Drop off was super easy and streamlinedCons:
Europcar in Cancun refused to accept my CDW, collusion damage waiver. Even though i had all the correct paperwork and even called the company who handled the coverage. Apparently even though it states they will accept CDW, they will not and they will give you a huge runaround as to why which isn't true, but when you are there, you basically have no choice but to accept whatever they charge for the extra coverage. My rental was $94, they charged an additional $250. This should just be charged up front to avoid all the hassle4.0 Mediocre

Feb 2021
Pros:
Poor experience enough that I will never consider using Europcar again and reconsider Kayak as well.Cons:
The staff lied to me immediately upon entering-which took a half hour. They told me that they had no contract with our insurance companies, American Express and State Farm , and as I result the company policy was that I had to buy full insurance. They also stated that the price quoted on the internet did not bind them as Kayak was only an agent. I have lived in Mexico for years and know that he was in fact lying to me. Ultimately we 'negotiated' a price that was twice what we were promised. I ended up with 3 insurances covering the vehicle and almost wished something happened to it. The gas tank was only a quarter full- I've never seen that.6 locations in Cancún

I was quoted 22 dollars a day. I ended up paying more than double that. I didn’t even pay for the insurance and I still payed more than double. It would be nice if the quote told you about fees instead of misleading you to think you’re getting a great deal.2.0 Poor

Pros:
Nothing because they just tell you that it's just a confirmation and not a booking. So since they had no car available, we couldnt hold on to our schedule. Plus, the staff was very unfriendly, in this high season, but i'm sure he would be begging us to rent a car in the low season!Cons:
Have the option of pre-paying to secure a rental, and not just a "confirmation" that has no value to them.2.0 Poor

Jan 2019
Cons:
When I went to pick up the car, the associate at the desk said that my reservation didn't exist, even though I showed him the confirmation email. He then said the only vehicle he had on-site was a stick-shift, and that to retrieve the car I rented online I would have to pay ~$500 and take a shuttle to a different rental car facility instead of the airport. I ended up having to take a bus to reach my destination, and then had to use bikes, taxis, and buses during the course of the trip instead of a vehicle.8 locations in Cancún
