I preordered a HYBRID and upon arrival I was informed they ONLY had 100% electric cars. We were forced to take possession of the electric car. This was highly inconvenient as we had to drive across country and charge the car many many times. It was a complete waste of time and money.

Horrific experience with Hertz in Rome Fiumicino. Rented a car that had a tire blown as soon as I started driving it. Called the Hertz location in Fiumicino and no answer. Called multiple times, but no answer. Had to call the US number only to get transferred to Road Side assistance for Canada? Ended up changing the tire myself then drove to my hotel. Kept calling Hertz in Rome (total of 8 times that day) but no answer. Tried calling Naples (no answer), Milano (no answer) and Salerno (answered but told me I wasn't covered because Hertz had franchised their business in Italy?). Suggested I pay for the flat myself and be on my way. In order to salvage my trip, I did just that. Only to find that the tire had prior damage in two places and it was unlikely that it could withstand another "patch" job. Nevertheless, I paid the fee for just that and tried to get ahold of Rome Hertz another 14 times over 4 days. No answer! The car sat parked because the newly patched tire went flat again! Seriously, I can't make this stuff up. Called the US again without help as they simply said I needed to deal directly with Rome Hertz only. I used Twitter to get a road side assistance number for Italy and the towed the car finally, while I had 5 days left on my rental. They refused to take me to Hertz to get a replacement saying I needed to pay a taxi for that (I was 60 miles away from the nearest location). I simply told them to keep the car and I would deal with it upon my return to Rome via another means. When I got to Rome, they had the nerve to charge me for a one way drop off charge in addition to my full contracted rate. NEVER AGAIN WILL I RENT FROM HERTZ/DOLLAR/THRIFY.

Car was not what I had booked-ad was for a Citroen midsize SUV Received an opel cross lander instead When I got to the vehicle I noticed it had multiple scratches on it So I took a video of the exterior of the car just in case. I should have gone back to the counter and asked for a different car but was tired and wanted to get on the road. When dropping the car off. the agent found a scratch that was not on the vehicle inspection I did not hit or damage the car while I had it. No one looked at the car when I was picking it up. The scratch could have happened while parked in the rental lot prior to my picking up the car? But it did not happen while I was in use of the car I refused to sign any paperwork assuming responsibility for any damage to the car.

How does it make sense to charge for extra drivers? There should be one price for two drivers. Also why does a physical card need to be presented when technology provides a more secure and flexible way of transacting? Fixing those two would have resulted in a perfect score. The attendants at pickup and drop off were very helpful and patient.

Very significant hidden on costs at pickup, including extra charges for airport locations for pickup and drop off and additional charge for one way travel. All of these details were know at time of booking and costs should have been clear. I would not have used service if I was aware of these.

We paid insurance twice. We paid 300 dollars when we booked in Canada, then another 350 euro when there for pick up. They said they would cancel our prepaid reservation and we would lose 100 percent if we didn't buy the extra insurance. Total rip off. they blamed third party Kayak for not telling customers about the need for international licence, and this would cost an extra 300 euros. They had a gun to our heads, so we had to pay. Totally feel ripped off by Kayak. will not use their booking ever again. George

Avis emplyee told me it is €20 per day for full coverage insurance. However when I pay it, it was more than double because of 90% of taxes. They should have told me before I pay.

Pros:

Worst experience ever. Rented a nice luxury Mercedes for my honeymoon and when we arrived they had a 3 hr line and then didn’t have a car for me. Ended up sticking me in a terrible tiny little fiat with the most uncomfortable and dangerous ride for my pregnant wife. I have never been so upset

Cons:

The insurance was so high and that was not mentioned when booking the car online. The VAT as well. I would not rent the car if that was mentioned in the site. I found that totally not fear.

The car was not properly prepared. They were behind , it was given a quick clean then handed over too us to inspect. The mileage on my invoice didn’t match. It has the previous drivers mileage included in mine. I took some pictures of things I thought were important. Car had no windshield washer fluid , found out highway, car was down oil, and tire had a slow leak that I nursed through the duration of our trip. When we returned they tried to say I damaged the plastic hubcap . I explained it was like that upon giving it to me . They said why didn’t I take a picture of it , I asked why didn’t you spend the time to point out all previous damages. They charge me $270 for a plastic hubcap that they probably won’t change. I have dealt with other car companies in Rome with no issues. I will never choose Avis again anywhere in the world. Stay away from this place in Rome.

Finding the pick up and drop off was a nightmare and we lost hours of time. Not clear where to catch the shuttle bus in Rome. The locations are not proper on google maps and the address provided exists near the wrong airport in Milan. We loat 1. 5 hours. Also, terrible experience with Marco in Milan, so rude. Receptionists were nice. Car was fine.
