Only one problem with the car rental experience. Budget In Falmouth, Ma is scheduled to open at 8:30 AM, the staff did not show up until 9:15AM. It was pouring rain and a line of about 8 people standing in line outside office in the rain. Calling the location did not help. Mail box was full. Going online with Budget with live chat did not help. Very concerning as many people were headed to airports, a funeral, etc. Car was about 90% full of gas and the car was never gone over or checked by staff. Very poor experience at picking up car. Car itself was nice and clean. Drop off was great!

The car had only 3/4 tank of gas, and no washer fluid. I made a mistake when the agent asked if I wanted insurance and when I realized my mistake was given no help to rectify the situation. I accepted insurance because I thought that it was already on the ticket and I was affirming it. Before I left the counter I realized that the insurance I'd purchased had been through Kayak and was not Budget. I asked them to delete their insurance since I already had purchased some, and they refused. The car ended up costing twice as much as I had planned, the staff claimed they were unable to help, the customer service number I was directed to said that the agent had to fix it, and no one would do anything. I hadn't even left the counter. I am very disappointed in Budget, and in Kayak for not alerting me to the fact that if I purchase insurance when I am reserving the car it is NOT the same as the reservation for the car. THIS IS BAD.
When I arrived the office gave me the keys to the car I had ordered. When I got to the car, the car wreaked of marijuana smell. I went back to the counter to tell the woman and she said "oh the prior customer smoked in there." So she already knew there was an issue before I got to the car. She wasn't surprised at all. She had no other cars available except for a minivan. I said well then it wasn't cleaned at all since it still smells, which is ridiculous, because the cars should be cleaned in between customers. She then sprayed something in the car but it didn't get rid of the smell. I had to attend a funeral and then drive 4 hours back to the Westchester airport. That smell was horrible and got on my clothes before I even got to the funeral. I also told her to make a note in the computer that this happened because I didn't want to be charged for the smoke smell when it had nothing to do with me. She just hand wrote it on the contract. When I got to Westchester, there was no drop box for the key in the parking lot - there should be! Instead I had to haul my luggage all the way to the counter inside the terminal to return the key. Overall, I would give it less than one star if possible.
