Cons: I called Payless before I booked to see if they charged for a spousal driver and they said not for this location. When we got there they charged for a spousal driver. We ended up getting the collision insurance as it included the spousal driver and the insurance so I was lied to by someone.

Horrible customer service when car had issue
Pros: drop off was easy
Cons: While driving on the freeway something became noticeably wrong with the tires. We got off the freeway, noticed the tire pressure alert light on. Nothing looked visibly wrong, but it had been a fairly scary experience just moments before so we didn't dare take it back on the freeway. I called the San Diego office and left multiple messages and could never get a hold of a real person. I even called like I was trying to make a reservation but still no real people answered. I then called the after hours emergency assistance number although it wasn't after hours. I was finally able to get a hold of a representative that manages multiple rental car agencies. He offered to open an email ticket. My response from the company HOURS later was to call the office and the road side assistance number. Magically - the next day - I had a voicemail from them I had just missed and a follow up email saying they tried to call me two times (not true) and that's why they are now attempting to get a hold of me via email. (which I started the email thread). Luckily we took matters into our own hand. We stopped at a local tire shop so we could continue to enjoy our vacation. EVERY TIRE was out of range for pressure 3/4 being OVER inflated and one under. That leads me to believe they don't check their tires well, or hire people who know how to. Incredibly frustrating experience. I'm just glad nothing was terribly wrong or I would have been out two days of a rental car. It would have been better to pay $30 for a week for a company that answers the phone.

Pros: personnel were friendly
Cons: We were under the impression that we would be renting a Toyota Corolla. Upon arrival, I said we were suppose to rent a Toyota and the woman said or a similar vehicle.
She offered us a Versa. Versa does not usually offer a center console so I said I would prefer something else.
How about an upgrade to a Hyundai Sonata. I said ok.
That quickly changed to a Volkswagen Jetta. Being somewhat tired from a long flight, we agreed. When we went to get the car, it had been double booked. The attendant said he would get us another car. The 2014 Jetta was brought to us. The inspection by the attendant was in seconds. When we left payless we noticed two dings on windshield. Upon conclusion of our vacation we brought the car back and notified the attendant of the following problems. Power Steering seemed to not functioning well and we pointed out the windshield problems. The attendant summoned another attendant. We stated that is how we received the car. The second attendant said we did not have to worry for I had purchased the additional insurance. I then stated the car was damaged from when we took it.
It is doubtful that I will ever rent from them again. Secondly I would suggest if You do rent from them go over the car with a fine tooth comb.

Payless Car Rental
Cons: Our bill ended up being $400 more than was quoted online... which was even more than Hertz was going to be! When we were given our rental car it was in poor condition - missing the passenger door side mirror cover! The rental company arranged for an exchange the next day at 8am, but never contacted me, so i had to call only to receive attitude and questioning. Then the exchange vehicle arrived and the man was rude to me. Not happy with this experience and will never use this rental car company EVER again.

Pros: The pickup time was set at 10PM, the same time my flight was to arrive and the same time Payless was closing. John went above and beyond to accommodate and kept the rental counter open until 10:30PM for me. The car pickup and drop off was fast and efficient.
Pros: Every employee I dealt with personally was incredibly professional and friendly.
Cons: When I tried to change my drop-off location (same day & time - from a medium sized town to a big city 1 hour away) I was told it would cost an additional $900. WHAT? Even if they needed another car at my original drop-off location (doubtful) there is no WAY it would cost them close to $900 to get another car to that location. I returned the car early and rented another car (from another company) for the next day for only $70. There is absolutely NO justification for that fee.

Pros: Got a great car, suitable for my cross-country drive. Chevy Malibu. I'd buy one. Great deal for a coast-to-coast drive, drop in another city. Car came with Sirius XM radio, but was like pulling teeth to get it initialized. Finally, due to persistence, it happened. Staff at Gainesville was great.
Cons: Very long ride in shuttle to rental office. Factor an extra 20 minds in if you're dropping off a car in San Diego. Staff at San Diego was a little 'millennial-cocky' and blase (that's with an accent on the 'e'. :) Told me that "I was not being helpful" (!!) Had to reel myself in a little, but the kid's attitude was unprofessional. Ultimately reasoned with the lad and got things sorted. Sirius XM radio was great - however it took 4 phone calls to finally get the signal sent so that it would work. First guy said, "I sent the signal, you're good to go" - Nothing - had to call back, and next person said it was impossible for some reason. Next person, same thing. Next person said, "I'm sending the signal. You're good to go". That time it finally worked. Staff in Gainesville was very helpful.

Pros: I reserved the vehicle for my parents who came of a cruise. I reserved it in my dad's name. My dad was going to have my mom drive back home. My dad tried to use his credit card to pay for the trip but his card was not exepted because the employee at hertz wanted a credit card in my mother's name. My mom had a debit card but that was not exepted. My parents ended up having to take a greyhound bus home. Had to wait 10 hours at the greyhound Depot for the bus. My senior citizen parents who have never had any issues like this in the past who are well of financially and could easily pay for the vehicle had one of their worst transactional experiences in their lives. They will of course let all their senior friends know about their experience with Hertz. My parents even tried to get Chase Private Client who they are part of on the line to vouch for their credit worthiness but the Hetz team did not want to budge. We will never use Hetz as a company. I will never use Hertz as a company. I will do my best to market my parents poor experience to clients, friends, coworkers, and anyone else in passing.

Cons: Have noticed on a few occasions Dollar will give me an "estimated price" and then upon turning in the car they jack up the final price. HARD SALES FOR UPGRADES
Pros: Driving the car
Cons: While waiting in a long line, the Dollar Agent was pushing hard for upgrades, insurance, and pre-paid gas. Even went so far as to laugh at the customers for not being "smart enough" to buy the pre-paid gas. Additionally, every time I tried to use Dollar rewards to pay for my rental I was informed the system was down or that location was privately owned. Bad experience with Dollar every time.
Pros: I booked large premium SUV (Suburban or similar). They didn't have that class of vehicle available. I was lucky to get a Dodge Durango but this meant we had to leave some luggage at home

Read your contract carefully before signing!!!
Pros: Got the subcompact car that I wanted.
Cons: Even though I explicitly stated that I didn't want any additional insurances (LDW/RSA), yet magically these appeared on the contract. I was super jetlagged that day, and I didn't quite take notice of what I was actually signing there. I was already back at home, filling out my travel expense statement, when I finally realized that I had actually been ripped off by ~ $200.
Seems to be a general phenomenon with all those rental car companies: They either want to sell you a vehicle more expensive than the one you originally reserved - because the latter is supposedly not available at the moment - (So why the heck am I making a reservation anyway??) Or they try to sell you something that you explicitly refused by putting it on the contract whatsoever.
In any case, here's my advice: READ YOUR CONTRACT CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING!!!

Cons: We waited for a very long time at the airport for pickup late at night. When we called the number, there was an automated voice saying a van comes every ten minutes...this is simply NOT true. There was also no way to connect with the actual rental office to speak with an actual person. The drop off was great and speedy, though he did forget I was there and dropped me off at the curb just past the terminal area.

Fast, easy rental process at San Diego's new airpo
Pros: No hastle. Rental paperwork was ready when we showed up, no hassle process and got the pick of the fleet in our class of rental.
Dropoff was just as easy and efficient.
Cons: Signage was a little confusing at the shuttle drop off. Signs pointed to the car pickup locations but no signage for the rental offices themselves so you have to walk up and down drop off area looking for the right office.

Cons: We waited in the heat for 30 minutes to check in. The price at the counter was about twice what I had reserved it for online. After showing them my reservation information the price was changed to the proper amount. Upon returning the car we had to carry our luggage through water puddles and under fence cables to get to the shuttle loading area.

No hard sell on optional insurance
Pros: The desk agent when picking up the car was very good about not applying undue pressure to get the optional insurance. She just asked once, and then left me alone.
Also, the price was excellent, picking up and dropping off the car took very little time, and the shuttle was there and waiting in both directions.
Cons: Agent said only minivan available was one he gave me. Agreed to accept if it had Bluetooth. Got in van and didn't have BT. Went back and said not acceptable and another agent produced another (nicer) minivan with BT. Shenanigans.

Pros: to rent a car on short notice on a holiday. being able to get a discount on top of it. Easy drop off.
Cons: It was hard to find my way to the car in the confusing parking lot. Had to go the wrong way to get there. The car wasn't in the place it was suppose to be. The guy on the gate had NO CLUE and one other employee we had ask for direction was also clueless.
The woman I made the contract was excellent and when I complained about the wrong location and the trash IN the car and the fact, that the car really wasn't that clean all together, she gave me a $30 discount and that was very appropriate!

Pros: After a bit of discussion at the counter, the agent agreed to give me the price set at the time of reservation.
Cons: Initially, the price was about 75% higher than quoted online. We were offered a rather odd make of car (a mini-van for 2 adults), and I found the customer service folks we interacted with at pick-up AND drop-off to be less than friendly, and at times less than attentive. The car was fine, the price was what ultimately we'd agreed to originally, but the experience - particularly compared to excellent customer service at competitors - left me unlikely to come back to Avis sometime soon.

He told me it was 11 dollars, I figured it would be nice to help him out and buy it. Found out later it was 11 dollars plus the additional 6.99 he never disclosed. Dirty sales, I guess that's what I get for being nice and trying to help somebody out. I won't be back.

Cons: The car was older, the tires were bald, and there was a faint tapping noise that increased with speed. The process to get to the actual agency wasn't very clear and so I had to call in 3 times. Laying out the pick up process (take the rental car bus to the rental car center, walk to the offsite shuttle pick up, then call the company to get you) on the website would help.

Old Used beat up cars!
Pros: Nothing, while they tried to meet my needs and were accommodating because I had to complain.
Cons: I was giving an outdated PT Cruiser that was clearly run down and damaged. While out on the freeway the car, turned off and I couldn't get the car started. Basically I was stranded. Furthermore, the starter came right out of the steering column. Basically I was given a used unsafe car. Their business model is, lets get used cars (10 yrs old) from the auction get them running and rent them to tourist (probably young kids) at a discounted price. I have nothing against used cars but these cars come with interior damage (stains, holes, smelly) . My car, in addition to the start gone out needed front shocks. I noticed the tires were all different brands and back tires were bald while the new tires were in the front

Shady and Misleading - Beware of "[Car Model] or S
Pros: Aside from the general shady feel/impression I had, nothing "bad" actually happened. Additionally, the guy who shuttled me from the airport and back to the airport was friendly and gave me some information about the city and things to do.
Cons: 1. Bus doesn't pick you up unless you call them to come pick you up.
2. The car you get is not like advertised on Kayak.com. The option I picked said "Hyundai Elantra or Similar," or something to that extent. The picture shown was that of a new, or relatively new, car. When I went to pick up my car, the first car offered to me was a mid-2000s Kia Spectre that looked like it was about to break down. Upon complaint, they re-did the contract and told me they had corrected the mistake. Upon inspection of the contract, the car being offered was a 2005 Kia Amanti which looked even older. Upon further complaint, they walked outside with me and told me that I could pick from any car they had available, but that everything I saw was what my selection was limited to. I ended up with a 2012 Malibu with about 70k miles on it, but at least it didn't smell like smoke.
3. Insurance. I felt very mislead with dealing with them with insurance. When I arrived, I asked about the option to purchase insurance that I was given on Kayak.com. It was something like $9/day. When I brought it up, requesting insurance so that I could totally and completely avoid involving mine in the event of any accident, they told me that insurance was $14.99 for the whole duration. This sounded good, but already weary I again re-read the contract. The insurance being offered would only serve as secondary insurance to my insurance. I again complained, and again the contract was modified. This time, they told me the insurance would serve as primary insurance, but by this time the price had jumped from $116 for a thursday-sunday to about $210. Again, I re-read the modified contract and noticed that this increased rate carried a $1,500 deductible. I this time expressed that I wanted complete coverage so that in the event of some unfortunate event, I was covered. They asked what my provider's deductible was, and I told them it was $1,000. They crossed out the $1,500 on the contract with a pen and wrote $1,000. Feeling increasingly uncomfortable with the insurance protection they were offering, I told them I wanted to opt out of insurance with them. They printed a final modified contract which is what I ultimately signed.
4. Cancellation. This one wasn't too surprising, but they wouldn't let me cancel the reservation without penalty. I noticed while waiting for them that two blocks away there were 3 other car rental providers which I had decided I'd rather pay more at. They told me that failure to rent would result in a full day being charged against my car as a late cancellation penalty.
In summary, Pacific seemed shady, low quality, and very misleading. I learned a lot about what to be cautious of in renting a car and will never be renting from a Pacific again. It's much more assuring to pay an extra 5-10/day and rent from a more reputable and well known car rental provider.

Pros: The pickup from the airport was prompt. I was only renting for one day but while out decide to stay over. I called to see if there was any problem with me keeping the car one more day. The agent said absolutely not and gave me the same rate as the first day.

Pros: Acceptable Staff.
Cons: Car was about 10 years old. Did not smell fresh. Dings on every body panel. Cigarette burns in seats. Rough running engine. Many strange noises. Check engine light. Got hassled about a scratch that was clearly pre-existing on a car so scratched and dinged it couldn't possibly matter. Cost same as more mainstream places.
Pros: Quick in and out when picking up and dropping off the car. Car was very clean and I had no problems. Friendly Staff.
Cons: Every 10 minutes or so, the car would make a skidding noise -- at first it was just the right side then the left side started making a noise too -- and we thought it was doing that because we went over the pavement marker. But even though we were in between the lines, it made a noise, literally every 10 minutes. During the whole trip, we were so scared if the car was going to lose control and couldn't wait to return the car. They should have their cars checked before renting them to customers.

Time consuming to pick up, 10 second drop off
Pros: Clean car, really fast and easy drop off.
Cons: Took about 45 minutes to get the car with only one person ahead of me in line. You'd think by the time you verify your registration in the office, then find your way up to the 3rd floor the staff would have had enough time to pull your car around...but no, waited up there for over 20 minutes and the staff barely acknowledged us.
The car made a constant "whirring" sound that kept us looking for sirens. On day 2 we finally figured out it was the car accelerating.

Pros: Terrific shuttle from the San Diego airport to the new Rental Car
Center. Have never used MCar before but proved to be a great rental
company. Pickup was a bit slow but the car was in excellent condition, very clean and the drop off was easy with the shuttle to take us back to the airport. The price was excellent!
Cons: Because I didn't have a major credit card budget had to run a credit check. Even though I passed, budget assigned me their oldest 12 passenger in the lot, instead of their new more comfortable vans. It was an old Ford E350 that was loud, bouncy, and horrible ride comfort.

Pickup at airport confusing if you don't arrive by
Pros: SAN airport rental car center is nice. Budget Fastbreak desk handled my rental smoothly even though I arrived by carinstead ofbybus from airport.
Cons: Rental was smaller than I expected (Mazda 3 is an intermediate?). Car had 30k miles on it. It seemed like more, noisy ride. But no problems.

Pros: Quick check in. Clean car.
Cons: Hard sell on filling up gas with them. Told me their gas price was much cheaper then what it would be out in the world. I found not a single gas station that echoed the price they told me when I rented the car. It was much cheaper out in the world than they stated.

Cons: I asked for an SUV with 7 seats. We were given a Toyota 4Runner. The next day we went to use the 3rd row of seats for our friends and there was no 3rd row that would fold up...It only had seats for 5 people. Disappointing
When you make a reservation for a intermediate car
Cons: I think if you make a reservation for a rental vehicle it should be there for you when you arrive. If not you should be upgraded at the same price.

Pros: Pick up and drop off was easy and accommodating.
Cons: When calling the Advantage car rental operator for additional information, I found that all three representatives were not aware of their line of work. The information was not clear. The contact phone number they provided me for the San Diego airport service center was incorrect. I waited on the line for an hour and a half then the line was hung up.

PU San Diego drop off LAX went well
Pros: Really liked ease of pick up and drop off
Cons: Car was fresh washed but they missed the rear window which was cloudy from the inside and outside. Had quite a few scratches but they didn't bother me.

Pros: Advantage was the cheapest for a reason
Cons: Cheapest beacause they don't hire staff. Be prepared to wait at the counter as they have one person. Then be prepared to wait to check the car out of the garage. Again one person. Returning, I couldn't pull into the designated parking area because other returned cars were stacked up. The reason? A an employee meeting! Once again waiting. One person working

Terrible Rental Car Company
Pros: Nothing! Service was mediocre at best. Selection of cars was poor. Condition of car was poor. Upsell on insurance was pushy and winshield cost mentioned several times (our windshield had a large chip in the drivers view). Customer service did not answer one time over several days, no one to check us in upon return - only one person in the onsite office.
Cons: Everything! See above.

Cons: We stopped for gas immediately before dropping the car off at the airport and left a full tank. There was literally no closer gas station we could have stopped at. Somehow we still "owed" over $14 for a gas charge because the tank "wasn't full." The needle was touching the full line, but barely on the lower side of it. Are you kidding me? The attendant was extremely argumentative and not helpful about this issue. They were clearly not ashamed of trying to scam us. My guess is not a single car arrives for return without a "gas charge."

Cons: Carlos helped a lot, even though he was at the other rental car place which I wasn't reserved for. The airport service told me I had no car there, then sent me to Carlos in little Italy, and then he worked really hard to get me a car and make sure they didn't charge me.

Good rental, would recommend
Pros: Our car was a great deal & value, gas efficient, and just what we needed for exploring San Diego & surrounding areas.
Service on drop-off was super efficient, friendly, with quick drop-off at the airport.
Cons: Wish they offered pick up at the airport, but it was only $8-$10 lyft ride. Luckily they offered complimentary drop-off!
Service was somewhat slow checking out the car, but still positive experience. Cheers to unlimited miles!
FYI: not allowed to drive the car to Tijuana (not sure I read this anywhere before booking, and it wasn't a problem for us, but just FYI).

Pros: The gentleman behind the counter was very nice and made my overall frustrating experience a little less brutal.
Cons: The advertisement AND email confirmation read clearly that the rental has unlimited mileage. However, when I arrived to pick it up and read the fine print on the contract, it stated that this is only given to customers who prove they just flew in to the SD international airport that day. I had to pay extra to get more than 100 miles per day, which I needed for my planned trip. Otherwise, I would have had to pay $0.49/mile over my allotted 200 miles. Unacceptable. I'm embarrassed for this company. Nowhere on my confirmation email is this information relayed. Economy Rent-A-Car is practicing bad business.

Cons: Carlos charged us $10 more than our booking price because we were dropping the car off early (before the car rental opened). He told us the extra $10 covered the shuttle fee (to airport) and "early drop off fee" - which was fine. A few days later I saw an additional $20 charged to my credit card. Called Carlos - he claims the $20 was for the shuttle fee. I told him he already charged me for that, and he called me a liar. Not using Economy again.
Cons: we waited 20 minutes and i had to go yo Hertz

Cons: I waited really long watching Alamo/enterprise/budget/etc. come by every 5 mins while I was waiting forever for my pickup. Next time maybe communicate better the process

Cons: Bad decision picking this Car rental.
They have only one shuttle, so it took a long time for pickup at the airport.
Rental office is in a trailer very far from the airport.
Upon returning the car, it took more than 45 mts for our shuttle to the airport to arrive! (luckily I arrived at the rental 4 hours before our flight so it turned out ok). And since the Rental office is in a trailer , no restrooms or coffee during this time.

Close to good
