Top tips for hiring a car at Tocumen Airport, Panama

  • One of the best things about car rental at Panama City Tocumen International Airport (PTY) are the number of transportation options that are available to get you from the airport to the center of the city. The problem with some of these options is that if you are traveling with a large group that has a lot of luggage it can be somewhat onerous to try to travel by these means of transportation. On top of that, if you're planning a longer visit to this area constantly paying for transportation to get you from place to place can start to add up quickly. That is what makes renting a car here such a convenient and affordable option.
  • A nice feature of flying to this airport is that there are no less than about 10 rental car companies that have an operation here offering car rental at Panama City Tocumen International Airport. There are some local companies as well as all the major rental car brands most travelers would be familiar with. All the rental car companies have customer service counters within the terminal buildings in the arrival hall near the baggage claim area. All the cars for rent can sit in the parking lots that are adjacent to the terminal building.
  • When you are ready to return your car rental at Panama City Tocumen International Airport the process is quite simple. As you approach the airport on Avenida Domingo Diaz you should keep an eye out for the ample signage directing to the rental car area. Once there, park in an appropriate location for your rental car company, lock your car, and then drop your contract and your keys in the dropbox for a contactless drop-off option. If you do need to speak to somebody about your rental, the staff is generally available from early in the morning until well into the evening to assist you.
  • Because this is such a popular tourist destination, you'll often find that Panama City Tocumen International Airport car rental can be difficult during the weekend and holiday periods when people are doing a lot of traveling. This will especially be true on Friday afternoons when a lot of people may be arriving for weekends.
  • Book your car hire at Tocumen Airport, Panama at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Passenger van

KAYAK
The vehicle was advertised as a 15-passenger van but truly it is a 14-passenger vehicle. Additionally, the front row is very difficult and uncomfortable for passengers to sit because of a huge black box built inside of the van. The van was very clean but smelled also like smoke. This was disturbing for my allergies, and we had to pay to have the vehicle detailed as a result. Lastly, the rental location customer service was great, but I was taken back by the $5,000 credit card hold for liability. This is extremely ridiculous and I have never experienced this requirement not even in America with high-end vehicles. If this is the requirement moving forward for Avis Panama this should be expressed in advance of pick-up and not as a surprise on the day of pick-up. There were so many hidden fees and as a preferred business renter with Avis (America) I was disappointed.

Alamo as some others on their groups are nothing but thieves. They scam me from a luxury car to a cheap one claiming that AMEX didn’t cover insurance for the luxury car while holding in their hands a letter from them stating that I was covered. But still charged me the luxury car rate blaming on Kayak taking their share off the top first. In other words they pretty much said not to use Kayak at all. I wouldn’t recommend Alamo or any of their affiliates to a dog. I’m not the first one they’ve done this to.
