Larger vehicles and 4x4s generally won't be necessary in Bourges or the rest of France unless you have a large group. Additionally, bear in mind that automatic vehicles aren't as common, so they often book out first. Generally speaking, a standard car or smaller will be best. Smaller cars will come in handy if you're visiting either very small towns or busier cities such as Paris.

The speed limit in Bourges is generally 50 km/h (approximately 30 mph). However, always keep an eye out for signs, as it can be as low as 30 km/h (around 18 mph). Outside of built-up areas, it's usually 80 km/h (roughly 50 mph) unless otherwise marked. Once you're on the motorway, you can generally drive up to 130 km/h (about 80 mph). Always stick to the speed limit; there are plenty of hidden cameras around and you'll need to pay the fine and a fee to your Bourges car hire company if caught.
