Whether you explore Lexington’s sights, discover the scenic nature of Daniel Boone National Forest to the east of the city, or visit Kentucky’s capital of Frankfort, about a 40-minute drive away, with a hire car you are flexible and free to do whatever you please during your stay in Lexington. For travelers wanting to explore Kentucky’s biggest city, Louisville can also be conveniently explored from Lexington, as it is only a bit over an hour away by car.
Blue Grass Airport is just 7 miles outside Lexington and has various hire car agencies onsite, including Alamo, Enterprise, and Hertz, along with some others. The easiest way to begin your time in Lexington is by picking up a hire car directly from there, allowing you to reach the city in about 15 minutes. Travelers can find the agency service desks in the baggage claim area on the first level, and pick-up and drop-off is right next to the terminal.
Lexington is famous for its many scenic routes and driving is generally a pleasant experience; however, heavy rain showers, sleet, and ice can be regular occurrences in Lexington and in Kentucky in general, so prepare for some challenging weather conditions. When the roads are drenched by rain showers or ice, slow down considerably and refrain from driving if you don’t feel comfortable doing so, but find a safe place to park and wait until the weather conditions improve. Also make sure to have the headlights on so other cars can see you coming.
As in most US cities, rush hour in Lexington is the most intense on weekdays between 8 and 10 am and 5 and 8 pm, but on the weekends there can also be increased traffic around places of interest, such as the Rupp Arena or Keeneland race track. Plan at least 45 minutes ahead if you have a game or race to get to so that traffic will not be an issue.

The staff was frustrated but friendly. The car type I reserved wasn't available, so they offered me something smaller, but for the same price. The car I ended up with was dirty, smelled bad, was dented and seemed a bit mechanically wonky. It functioned for the rental period. Drop off was a problem. There was nobody at the location (during business hours). Several people were waiting outside the doors. Thirty plus minutes later an employee reappeared. He processed the drop off. While I waited for my ride, I heard him making several phone calls to people, explaining he didn't have the cars available they had reserved. He was friendly, but frustrated. This location is understaffed and their inventory system doesn't seem to be connected to reality. I will not use this location again.

I requested a specific car that you rent all the time, 1 week prior to my rental and was told that wasn't what I rented and what I needed was more money so I did that. I was then told the specific car I was requesting still could not be guaranteed. It is listed as a mid size suv, mazda cx50 or comparable. So I found something else with a different co. and saved $100! I will rent with them vs Budget anytime. Lady was rude on the phone. You lost my business and everyone I know! Shame on you for not being CUSTOMER FRIENDLY and inconveniencing me, the CUSTOMER!

Rented a car from the downtown location, but they called before pick up to notify that they had no cars to rent. Referred us to the airport location. The agent at the airport was very friendly and helpful and the rest of the rental process was very easy. The cost was reasonable and the car was clean.

I was unaware that I needed to have my credit card with me. When I booked the rental, it didn’t advise me on what I needed to bring in order to pick it up. I have rented vehicles before and was able to use a debit card. So, I was stranded in Lexington instead of being where I needed to be.

Supplier choice

Seems very deceptive. They didn't have my car when I went for pickup and alternatively offered me another vehicle that was much more expensive. This seems to be a tactic of their of manipulating customers into higher prices who are stressed for time. I ended up walking out of there, walking down the street, and took my business to Enterprise, who took care of me in a matter of 5 minutes. Never going back to Hertz.

Hertz refused to honor the one way reservation from Lexington to Chicago. They said they didn’t have enough cars. That failure cost me over $500. They did the same thing to several other customers with one way reservations. One dejected younger customer was practically in tears. The height of irresponsible corporate behavior.
