When thinking about getting a car hire in Chennai, it is wise to think about where you may be doing the most driving. For navigating the roads in the city, a compact economy car may be wise, as it will be easier to zip in and out of the traffic and find suitable parking. For heading out of Chennai into the surrounding areas, a standard or intermediate SUV will provide additional comfort for a long-distance trip, while an estate car or passenger van would be ideal for a larger group or if you have a lot of luggage.

In the centre of Chennai, the speed limit is 40 kph for a motorcycle or light motor vehicle (like a car hire) during the day until 22:00, and then at night, between 22:00 and 06:00, it goes up to 50 kph. In most of India, the limit on the expressways is 120 kph, while in and around Chennai, this has been set at 80 kph. When you pick up your car hire in Chennai, it is advisable to request advice from the customer service agent about the speed limit on the different roads in and around the city and Tamil Nadu in general.

There are several paid multi-storey car parks in Chennai, run by the Greater Chennai Corporation, and it may be easier to park in one of these than to find parking on the street. You will need to download the GCC parking app to pay for your parking. The rates to park your hire car will be around ₹ 20 (A$ 0.35) per hour or part thereof. On-street parking in Chennai also comes with a charge that will depend on where in the city you are – in the central pedestrian plaza, for example, on-street parking will cost in the region of ₹ 60 (A$ 1.06) per hour.
