Pros: Staff were fabulous really went out of their way to help. Extra touches like free tea coffee and hot chocolate, massage boots and lollies made this a great place to stay. Room was enormous and really comfortable.
Cons: Nothng
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Utopia well exceeded our exceptions with a beautiful guest area, seamless check-in, spacious rooms and a great restaurant to round it off. Location was central to both the main street as well as the ski lift access.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The service was sensational, they were on the ball with every thing and it was immaculately clean. Very helpful and in a great central location.
Cons: The shared bathroom was on the ground floor and I had to go down 2 flights for a shower everyday. However, toilets were on every floor.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly hosts. Small family style hotel, good breakfast which is important if you go skiing afterwards, great location 2 min to the main streets for shops and restaurants and 5min to the ski slopes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great. Staff was friendly, facilities were clean, beds were comfortable. Didn't have a single complaint.
Cons: Nothing.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wow, what a treat. We had only a quick stay in Nozawa Onsen planned on a long ramble around Japan and this hotel was great. Our only regret was not staying longer. We visited during an un-busy time so had the hotel basically to ourselves. The room was huge and the most comfortable futons ever. We were welcomed with an easy check-in and tips for local area including the 13 free hot springs in the area. One is less than a 1 minute walk away. The hotel was in the heart of the village area (or one of the hearts) so lots of shops and restaurants around - many were closed for season but regardless, plenty to amuse you on a walk. The proprietor also provided an extra snack and coffee in the morning as we woke too late for normal meal and also let us leave car for a while so we could stroll around. All together, a great comfortable, unpretentious, welcoming Utopia. PS we even had a great view from our room window.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location, just 5 min walk to gondola (even with a 3 year old) or 3 min walk to town. A traditional onsen across the street and many others only minutes away. The heater worked great in the room, and the heated carpet was our favorite in room amentity. A lovely family runs Utopia and are the most helpful & kind people. They are very family friendly, our 3 year old daughter loved to hang out downstairs watching the fish and talking with everyone. The family would always engage with her. The family run Utopia goes above costumer service and helping out in any way they can. They called the daycare to see if we could drop off our child for a powder day, they helped us figure out our bus times and transfers. We look forward to staying at our favorite place again, in our fav little town in Japan. We would recommend it 100%
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location Great value for money Clean rooms and comfy futon Mattresses Shared toilets were very very clean and they even had a tiny little “onsen” bath onsite if you don’t want to go out and soak in public bath
9.6 Excellent
Pros: the locations were excellent only a few minutes walk by the bus terminal and super close to the village, therefore easy access to all restaurant and supermarket. a small public onsen also just outside so super convenience. close to the Nagasaka Gondola (maybe around 7 mins walk uphill) and lots of stairs to get to the gondola. if you are renting equipments there are places where you can store your ski gear so you don't have to take it down with you. PS: please have the breakfast, they are excellent
Cons: I was a little disappointing with no pyjamas provided. usually the Japanese accomodations always provide Pyjamas for all guests.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Tomii-San and his wife Kaori are the owners, and they are wonderful hosts who take great pride in their establishment. Everything in the hotel seemed custom-fit to our family, even the front room with a fireplace, massage chair, and aquarium with very unique fish (which our son greatly enjoyed). Staying with them was a real treat.
Cons: Nothing.

Pros: We loved everything. Best location, clean, warm and comfortable rooms, great food, but best of all was Naoko our hostess. She went to so much effort to make our holiday in Nozawa perfect. She is amazing, so welcoming. It felt like home.
Cons: We loved everything
9.2 Excellent
Pros: What a welcome we got and what wonderful hosts! We spent two weeks in Japan and the stay in this traditional house was the highlight of our trip. Never before have we been so well treated and kindly welcomed as by these hosts. Our daughters were thrilled and are still talking about the lovely lady running the hotel. If we were to come back we would definitely stay with them again - such a friendly family!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Naoko is very kind and does her best to make your stay pleasant. Everything is clean and since the guesthouse is not that big the bathroom down the hall is never busy and always clean. Perfect place for families to stay. The breakfast is exceptional value. Choose the Japanese breakfast. Location very close to the Nowawa bus from the Iiyama train station. Get off at Shinden station (second to last) and walk about 150 m to the guesthouse. The same station has a shuttle bus to the Nagasaki gondola. You don’t need the bus at the end of the day. It’s an easy walk down the hill at the end of the day. Enjoy!

9.6 Excellent
Pros: Heated seats on the toilets! The hosts were very kind and helpful. Eat breakfast here. It is good and there is little for breakfast elsewhere.
Cons: If you want a traditional Japanese breakfast, be sure to ask for it specifically, otherwise they will serve you an american style breakfast.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The hosts were so cheerful and helpful during our stay. The Riyokan was immaculate and very comfortable. The spa was very relaxing. It was a short walk to all amenities in town.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had a lovely time at oyado uemesa. The host was lovely and made us feel so welcome! She was full of useful information too. The room was comfy and we loved the extra touches like hot water and tea. Very clean too.
Cons: It was quiet season (spring skiing) - but that meant we got even extra attention from the hosts! No complaints

10.0 Excellent
Pros: My first time at a Ryokan and the hospitality of the owners were awesome. It was quiet and the Japanese breakfast was excellent. (You can choose a western breakfast).
Cons: There wasn’t much I didn’t like. I had the room with no private bathroom but that was expected and the shared facilities were exceptionally clean. The dry room wasn’t particular hot enough to dry your gear overnight was the only issue but it was dry enough.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This lodge is a great find in the middle of the town, close to restaurants and short walk from the bus stop/lifts. The staff were friendly, helpful and it was very clean/ roomy.
Cons: There is nothing this lodge could have been better at. They were excellent.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Very happy with Matsuya. We stayed in two different rooms due to a late booking by us. The Japanese room was fabulous and roomy, the Western room smaller. Staff very helpful and breakfast great. When I get back to Nozawa again I'll be stayed here.
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent

Cons: Front door locked at midnight.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Extremely helpful staff. Clean and easy.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese hotel that has been in business over 50 years Same family running the hotel
Cons: Everything was great
7.9 Good
Pros: Fantastic location just off the main restaurant/shop street in Nozawa on the road that heads up to the Gondola. Spacious sunny tatami room with nice view towards old church. Very comfortable futon beds. Clean brand new (but shared) toilet facilities. Ski waxing/tuning room and large drying room.
Cons: Small and fairly basic bathroom/onsen (but there are plenty of other great public onsen close by). Gondola is close but its a steep uphill climb. Cold draft at night caused by full length windows and heater positioning meant half the room was very hot, the other half was cold.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were amazing, the room was cozy, the onsen was great, breakfast and dinner were delicious and the lodge was in the centre of town right next to all of the shops and restaurants.
Cons: The only thing to note is that because the hotel is located in the centre of town, to get to the ski lift, you need to walk up a hill. But that's not really something to dislike.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Good value for money
Cons: The common areas like corridor, bathrooms were cold, it wasn't very pleasant to take shower as I was shivering.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff is Great
Cons: Nothing

8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owner was kind and helpful. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and a great cultural experience. Our room had a private bathroom. Snow boots and umbrellas were provided if needed. Across the road from a public onsen.
Cons: The interior was a little dated/ worn but it didn’t stop us enjoying the experience.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly owners who were so helpful. It was very homely
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Incredibly friendly staff, amazing hospitality. Traditional style beds were more comfortable than I expected--we slept great. The breakfast was a real treat.
Cons: Ensuite bathroom was small, but I've come to expect that everywhere in Japan. Sitting on the floor in the dining room was a bit uncomfortable for a westerner like me. They brought us the low seats with backrest when we asked, so that was great.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: very helpful staff. quite close to the main street so lots of food options!
Cons: a little far from the ski lift/gondola, walking up a slight hill with snowboarding gears everyday may not be for everyone
7.9 Good
Pros: Yukiko was a charming and very helpful hostess. The onsen was a unique feature for a hotel
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The ryokan is located within 5 minutes walk from the main street in Nozawa, and 10 minutes to the walkway to the Hikage ski area. Very convenient location and a decent onsen right opposite the Ryokan. The hotel staff was very helpful. She gave us all necessary information through email before our arrival and when we checked-in to our room. She picked us up and dropped us off at the main bus stop so that we didn't have to drag our three big luggage around. The room itself was spacious and well-lit.
Cons: Not a major problem and it was clear on the site when we booked that there was no shower room inside the guest room, but it would be more convenient if there was. Compared to some other hotels in the area, this ryokan is slightly tucked away so might be a concern for people who need to carry their own ski equipment to the ski area.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly owners and staff. They went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Great natural Onsen .
Cons: It took me a few nights to get use to the traditional Japanese bedding but after that, quite comfortable.
7.5 Good
Pros: Staff
Cons: No Private shower
7.5 Good
Pros: Breakfast was large Japanese style.
Cons: No en-suite bathroom. Open space shower Restricted breakfast times No flexibility in checkout
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, genuinely traditional style Japanese Ryokan, with own Onsen and close to several of Nozawa's famous public Onsens. Breakfast good.
Cons: No real complaints. Is a bit of a walk to ski lifts, but that is balanced by being a quieter part of town, which suited us.

Cons: i found no english sign of hotel name only japanese therfore we lost when the first time arrived. The way to hotel and floor in front of hotel is slippy. Please be careful while walking. You need to climb the way to ski area it is not easy for my first ski with ski shoe and all equipments to carry along
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and well managed Japanese style pension. Excellent and friendly service. Good for kids. Good rental of skis and snowboard.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location was fantastic only 250 meters walk to the ski lift. The owners were super helpful and friendly.. We will definitely stay here again... Great little Onsen in the building...
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Its a Ryokan; which is what I wanted. The room I chose used shared facilities which were fine. The staff speak sufficient English for a stay by non Japanese speakers. Situated halfway between the ski slope and the town is convenient. Note the building colour is actually light grey!
Cons: I weigh 66kg but even for me the toilet cubicles (note they are western style) were chotto chisana
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had a fantastic stay at Pension Miyazawa! The staff were lovely, very accommodating and helpful with our early arrival, even getting our room ready for us at 1pm when we arrived at 11am. The location is fantastic, 5 minutes walk from the main Nagasaka Gondola (and a short skate/skin/walk up to the Hikage lift area and if the queue is long). Also 5 mins from the main street of town and fantastic (VERY HOT) public onsens. The lodge was cleaned daily, had a very warm and effective drying room for all our gear, and the brekky was fab - a choice of styles (japanese, western, pancakes, bread based etc). We had the Japanese choice and it was hearty, healthy and fresh. Near wonderful restaurants - if you stay here make sure you try Banpuku for great ramen and udon, which is just 50 metres downhill from the lodge on the right, marked with a little lantern and sign. It's super local, tiny and not even on Google Maps yet but was incredibly delicious and cheap. If you are thinking of staying in Nozawa Onsen pick this great locally run pension - the hospitality, food and service was wonderful!
Cons: The only SLIGHT inconvenience for some people could be accidentally walking past it - but then again, that's part of the charm! It was a tiny bit hard to find from the street, it's up a driveway around the corner from Pure Nagasaka. However, once found it was a perfect location between the lifts and main street of town.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We've stayed in a number of places around nozawa onsen and the greater Nagano area for ski trips. The wafu Pension was by far our best stay. The location is ideal, the rooms and large clean and comfortable and the staff is wonderful. The ski Centric focus and facilities (dry room, ski locker) were a huge bonus. We look forward to visiting again!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is the kind of family-run place where you are taken care of. Our daughter was sick and the staff made her some broth and delivered it to us. Breakfast is delicious. The room with the loft was perfect for us. Thank you for the wonderful stay!
Cons: We couldn't find anything wrong with the place. It is a bit of a walk up the hill, but then you are closer to the slopes.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Loved the traditional Japanese breakfasts. The dinner we ordered was delicious and excellent value. The staff were really nice. I want to stay at Wafu Miyazawa again. Pro-tip: rent a yukata to chill in, and don't forget to use the on-site hot bath.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Service was excellent and helpful

7.9 Good
Pros: This inn is VERY close to the lift making it very convenient for skiing! Its about a 10 min walk from the main stretch of shops and restaurants. The owner was very welcoming and gave us a map of the city and a 10% discount to rent gear at a shop nearby. When we returned from a day out, the owner's wife brought us a small plate of sliced apples - and also sent apples with us when we checked out. Be aware: the bathrooms and showers are shared and the rooms are comfortable, but basic. The room we booked had tatami mats throughout and we slept on futons. (there are some western bed rooms available) This is a great small place to rest your head while you enjoy skiing and onsen.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Could walk to the main gondola in under a minute. The staff were so helpful and nice. Was very clean
Cons: Small pillows
7.9 Good
Pros: Location was amazing, maybe 1min walk to the gondola, 7min walk to main restaurant strip. Lovely hosts! Rooms very clean and ensuite was small but nice.
Cons: We were asked to find our own breakfast every morning due to a large group staying there. We thought there was an onsen on site but couldn't find it.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Location and high standard of cleanliness
Cons: The property was excellent
7.1 Good
Pros: The location is absolutely brilliant. 2 mins walk from the main gondola.
Cons: Overpriced breakfast. All a bit disorganised, in terms of check in and out as well at the bathing and breakfast times.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location, owners are great !
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hosts are great! The room was comfortable and everything was really nice. It's a budget option but I think it's one of the best. Beds on the tatami mat were super comfy.
Cons: You can only use the shower between 3:30pm and 9:30pm. As someone who has a morning shower I found this really frustrating!!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owner picked us up from the bus station and helped to get to the hotel - they were very helpful and kind! Highly recommended! Room was heated very well compared to other hotels in Japan on winter.
Cons: Warmer onsen room (floor), but that is just how Japanese do onsen.. :)
9.2 Excellent
Pros: View from the room was great, room was quite big and clean, free tea and sweets. Clean small onsen.Heater in the room was very hot.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is great, only 2-3 minute walk to the gondola. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The wash facilities are nice and clean. The owners gave us a lift to the bus station with all our bags which was much appreciated !
Cons: The showers are located downstairs. No problem for us.

Pros: Fantastic hospitality! The staff where awesome and they made us feel right at home! I’ll be returning
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese inn (guest house). Manager and his wife were very helpful and accommodating.
Cons: It's location was a little far from the centre of the village.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owner and staff are all super helpful and nothing is ever a problem! Rooms are are in a traditional style and comfy. Thoroughly enjoyable stay and will be back!
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Traditional style. Good breakfast
7.9 Good
Pros: The location The service, staff and owner very polite and obliging. The onsen Rooms were comfortable in the traditional Japanse way. Close to restaurants and bars. Close to transport Close to town centre. Close to ski slopes.
Cons: Would have preferred a private bathroom and toilet. They had a 11pm curfew - which was not compatible with younger generation. No cereal option for breakfast or lactose free option. Toilets had a bad smell of urine - might have been a plumbing problem.
7.5 Good
Pros: Very good position, close to one end of the slopes. Large rooms, with a sitting area close to the window, and nice views. Did not try the breakfast, but as others have said there is a close by bakery which is awesome. We also used the owner’s service of pre-buying the tickets for skiing which was very convenient and a little cheaper
Cons: A bit run down, looks a bit old and you can’t say it is charming at all. It is very clean but still in the toilet there is a persistent smell of urine, I am sure they are doing all they can.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The host is very friendly and it is easy to get to the ski hill from the hotel. I had a great stay here.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The owner went above and beyond for any request and was extremely accommodating and welcoming. The drying room for snow gear was efficient and there is plenty of storage downstairs for your skis/boards. The room was a lovely traditional design with strong heating and comfortable beds. We were more than happy with the hotel and the proximity to the nearest chairlift made access convenient. Breakfast was delicious and was a great way to start the day.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: We had two traditional rooms on the third floor with stunning views and a little alcove seating area in each. Mattresses, pillows and heating were great. The onsen is small but the water was lovely and hot. It was a 2 min walk to free ski shuttle bus, 12 minute walk into the centre of town and 4 minute walk to the chairlift. The staff were lovely and the owner uses a translation app which is very useful and often entertaining.
Cons: We were hoping for a traditional Japanese breakfast when we paid for the breakfast option. The breakfast was OK with a fried egg and croissant but also some random things like jelly, a cube of plastic cheese and cabbage. There's a wonderful Swiss bakery about 3 minutes walk away if you want a western breakfast.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Very helpful staff, both the main lady and man were very gracious hosts.

Pros: The location was perfect. It was really close to the bus terminal and the food places in town. Yet it was also a short walk up the mountain for the ski activities. Really the most ideal spot to be staying in Nozawa Onsen. The onsen was also always empty and felt private. The decor of the rooms were clean and really well maintained. Love our stay!
Cons: More options for vegetarian breakfast will be more ideal!
7.5 Good
Pros: The staff were good and very accommodating.
Cons: Room food and towels is restocked and cleaned 3 days, every 2 days would be better and fitting with its image of a semi premium accommodation at Nozawa. Lighting is very dim and could be brightened in the room and the entrance.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Excellent size room (by Western standards!). Good option for self catering, with a small kitchen. Great having laundry facilities too.
Cons: Not much to complain about really.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The rooms were spacious and colorful. We were provided with veery cute onsen bags when we arrived. The location is about as central as you can get. The women at the front desk were also extremely nice.
Cons: I could have lived without the breakfast, which you had to prepare yourself from items they supplied.

8.8 Excellent
Pros: Bright, warm , clean, friendly staff, cook your own breakfast when you want it and have your eggs as you like them, really thick brown bread, coffee nespresso, good sound proofing (never heard neighbours)
Cons: Beds very hard, no glasses or cups in the superior studio, but loads in the executive studio so we could borrow but would be a challenge if you were just in the superior room. Onsen was too hot to get into. I only tried once - it may have cooled off later, but I did have the cold tap on and it made no difference. Need english directions as to how to use apple tv - i'm tech challenged!

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location, away from main road and traffic yet very close to main street and gondolas. The sweetest, kindest and most helpful owners! Our flight was delayed by 1.5h so we weren't able to make it to hotel as arranged, Qantas didn't apologise but hotel owner understood and didn't charge us for the 1st night that we had to stay in Tokyo instead. When I asked for help with bus and train stops to our next destination (as they were in Japanese writing)6 nights later ( Yudanaka, Shibu Onsen), the lady owner kindly translated the stops to English and than felt that it was all to difficult and offered us a ride - unbelievable! We were so very grateful!!! Instead of traveling for hours we had hours to enjoy walking around Shibu Onsen until our check in time, really can't thank you enough, it was raining all day! The breakfast is outstanding, so many different ever changing dishes, a joy and a real treat to wake up to! Our room was so beautiful and so warm, very stylish Japanese which we very much wanted, generous room size, recommend this hotel warmly to all! You will not regret it!We can't wait to return! Thank You Kindly For Everything! It was such an amazing experience!
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly, breakfast was wonderful.
Cons: Nothing
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely host who was extremely helpful. Less than 10 min walk to lifts and only a few minutes walk to one of the public onsens. A nice japenese breakfast each morning (along with toast, cereal, coffee and juice). Also a beautifully presented property.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic food and super friendly and helpful owner. Second time staying here and just as good as I remembered! Food was even better than the first time! Make sure you try out the dinner. Owner is an amazing cook.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing place to stay! Our room was very spacious, bed super comfortable to sleep in, best & tastiest breakfast ever. The entire place was spotless, very clean. Our host Satski was very friendly and helpful and speaks well English.
Cons: NA
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Satsuki san was a wonderful hostess for our visit, and the meals we enjoyed at the Inn were exceptional. Very clean and well laid out... a wonderful experience for the whole family.
7.5 Good
Pros: The bath and shared shower was very traditional
Cons: One day had a stink beetle in the room and had to remove it without killing it, which was alarming especially because it was on my sleeping 9 month old face!!! Otherwise, wonderful, just slightly long walk to Hikage area (where I had childcare booked) Her English level was just okay, enough to get by, but still very minimal/basic.
8.3 Excellent
Pros: The owners were exceptional hosts and the breakfast each morning was such a wonderful Japanese experience for our family. Our daughter left her camera in the taxi we caught from the bus terminal to Apple Inn and the owners called the taxi company and then went and collected the camera from the taxi terminal. Can not rate the hosts more highly - wonderful people.
Cons: The room we had was a good size with a beautiful view and traditional mat bedding but after skiing, not the most comfortable, based on what we are use to at home. Also having a shared bathroom was something a bit challenging for us with younger children. The showering times were prescribed and separated into male and female. It was a positive experience with wonderful hosts, just culturally quite different.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had a lovely stay in a traditional tatami room. We booked breakfast after reading other suggestions to do so and it was a fantastic experience. There is also an option to book dinner which we would highly recommend. The shared showering/bathing facilities were very clean and it was easy enough to have the showering facilities to ourselves as it's usually not busy. The hosts were very pleasant and went above and beyond in assisting us in our stay.
Cons: Sometimes it can be hard to connect to the wifi if there are a lot of people in the inn, but if you ask for the router to reset then it should be fine.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: My hosts, Mitsureiro and Satsuki, were so generous and kind and pleasant to be with. I injured my knee whilst I was there and they did everything possible to assist me with getting to the doctors and ensuring I had everything I needed and kept me so comfortable - I feel indebted to them. Food was first class Japanese cuisine

Pros: Great location and Staff friendly.
Cons: no house keeping. I saw public trash can is full. No one clean it up 3 days.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful place, and good to stay. I will choose there again when I visit Tokyo next time.
Cons: No.
7.5 Good
Pros: The location is really good. The hot spring in hotel is awesome! The dinner is good also. The staffs are very nice.
Cons: The breakfast is normal.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast. Really nice Lady owner/manager
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great location - only two minutes walk from the bus station and a few minutes walk to the people mover that takes you to the gondola station. Manager was very helpful. The hotel's onsen is perfect for recuperation after a day of skiing - plus there are over ten free public onsens throughout the village.
5.4 Okay
Pros: Location was great.
Cons: Cleanliness was below standard, dusty and old
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great spot, right in centre of town. Only downfall is we maybe would have preferred to stay closer to Nagasaka Gondola. Otherwise this place is amazing! Close to the moving walkway, town, dinner spots and public onsens. The in-house onsens were a great bonus too! Very friendly staff and yummy breakfasts.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Futons were comfortable and the facilities were great! They have their own onsen on site which was wonderful specially after a day of skiing. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Also, the Japanese breakfast was delicious.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is fantastic. The host is very nice. The host's cat is cute. The room is Japanese style and comfortable. Onsen is provided but I seldom use it. The room is warm enough to dry skiing accessories. Drying room is available for ski and snowboard.
Cons: Overall is good
7.1 Good
Pros: Last rooms left on our dates in Nozowra Onsen. Reception staff were lovely. The snow oh my God best in years.
Cons: The hotel onsen was poor. Better to go to free public onsens. Stayed 4 days and rooms were never cleaned.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: Kiriya Ryokan is extremely beautiful and welcoming! The family is warm and sweet with lots of valuable insights about things to do and the history of Nozawa. Breakfast included Onsen tomago (eggs soft boiled in the hot springs), a wide array of homemade pickles and local jams.
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Very friendly owners and cats. Lovely garden. Nice to have its own onsen. Loved Nozawa Onsen....all the eggs, steam and huge variety of types of onsen to choose from
Cons: Slightly faded in bits .....and a bit ramshackle.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The proprietors, Akira and Ko are the best! Helped us with several extras (Akira led us on a short hike and let us feed the koi).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner, Ms Ko, is very friendly and helpful. She's able to speak English and able to explain some skiing details that we require. The breakfast and dinner meals that they have provided is very delicious. In addition, they were able to arrange the futons during dinner time and re-arrange the seating arrangement during breakfast. The rooms and entire ryokan is very clean and there is easy access to the Ogama, as well as skiing stations.

10.0 Excellent
Pros: The Onsen was the perfect temperature, the breakfasts were fantastic and distance to the free shuttle was very short
7.1 Good
Pros: Fantastic skiing - really loved the ski resort and village which is pretty with traditional Japanese buildings. Hotel is reasonably close to ski fields and is clean. Manager gave us a lift to bus station on the last day
Cons: Only male and female onsen in hotel and no separate shower outside of the onsen which is only open from 4pm-10pm. The hot showers in the onsen only run for 7 seconds before shutting off so need to be continually restarted. All servings of the hot breakfast are put out at all chair settings at 7.20am and go cold quite quickly so if you are not there on the dot then the breakfast can be inedible. Pillows are like bean bags and bed mattresses are a tad hard.
5.8 Okay
Pros: Breakfast was good- they tried to cater for a more western palate.
Cons: Futons were crazy firm and pillows were stuffed with beads. We have stayed in nozawa before on futon and were comfy. Also, there was no bathroom only Onsen, this was only open from 4-11 so could not wash in the mornings
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Loved the Japanese family room, beautiful view.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Owner was really friendly and helpful. Walking distance from skiing gondola station.
Cons: A bit far from central of town.
7.5 Good
Pros: The view from our room onto snow covered fields was amazing. We appreciate the owner accomadating us as a family of 3 - somehow our booking was made for 2! We only saw the owner at check in snd check out, and he generously drove myself and the luggage upto the bus station - hubby n daughter walked!! The lodge is not in the middle of the village, but only a 10 minute walk away - which was beautiful in the snow falls! Nozawa Onsen is truly beautiful - we would go again and ski that time (couldnt ski due to hubby’s motorbike accident injuries in November). All bath houses are great and there are enough restaurants to suit everyone and every budget.
Cons: Our room was ultra small and the bunk beds uncomfortable.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Everything especially the breakfast, onsen and wood burning stove
Cons: Nothing
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The location, cleanliness and the breakfast
Cons: Pillows
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Aki greeted us warmly when we arrived earlier than planned and let us check in early too. He was amazing with recommendations and was very approachable. This lodge is 1min walk from the Nakao bus stop which is handy for the free mountain shuttle to the slopes and about 5mins to the bus stop that goes back to Iiyama. Would definitely stay again
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing lodge, nice to stay in traditional Japanese accomodation with an onsen. Breakfasts were really good, and super close to shuttle bus stop and bar. The owner is a legend too, 11/10 for hospitality.

7.1 Good
Pros: Location on piste
Cons: Cold eggs for breakfast every day. The western breakfasts are rubbish and you have to pay 200 yen to get milk not crema for your coffee Evening lodge meals also served cold. Shower pressure low. Not heated well compared with other places we have stayed in ski region
8.8 Excellent
Pros: Clean, simple, amply sized modern rooms with a great view of the slopes. Ample portions at dinner and the Japanese style breakfast was quite good. Lovely staff, convenient rental shop, simple onsen and the lodge is easy to access from both the pairs lift and the moving walkway in Nozawa Onsen village.
Cons: It would be great to have WiFi access in the rooms rather than having to go to the lobby or dining rooms. Western breakfast was only OK. Guests should be allowed to have coffee even if they order Japanese breakfast.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great location right next to ski lifts. Our host Tak was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble! The staff were also amazing and worked tirelessly to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Breakfast (included) and dinner (optional but very convenient after a long day on the slopes) were delicious, great value and beautifully presented. Soaking in the Onsen was most relaxing and refreshing at the end of the day. Loved our stay, would definitely like to return in future. Many thanks to Tak and staff for a fabulous family holiday!
Cons: Shared bathing is not for everyone but if you can overcome initial reservation it is well worth the experience. Our family stayed in Japanese style accomodation with shared toilet/bathroom facilities but there are rooms with private en-suite facilities and western style bedding. It’s a struggle to find anything negative to say about our experience at Lodge Denbey. We had a great time!
7.5 Good
Pros: The dinner at night was good value and tastes good. We stayed in the log house which was just above the onsen and that was really convenient. Onsen was quite decent. Relatively near to the main gondola, maybe 5 minutes walk.
Cons: It is very far from the main village and there is no transport available. It is a long walk, uphill and in the snow.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent in-house dinners. Friendly and helpful host/owner. The Lodge was on the slopes but the luggage was transported to and from the Lodge by over-snow vehicle from an associated lodge near the bus station in town. Good secure ski storage and heated boot room with easy access from slopes. Excellent in-house onsen. It is a bit of a walk back into town and the moving walkway shuts at 5:00pm but this didn't bother us as the in-house evening meals were excellent.
7.5 Good
Pros: Loved the Denby. Ski in ski out - great accommodation, gracious host. Extremely clean and helpful staff. Could not fault. Onsen on the premises often for own use. Delicious breakfast and authentic Japanese dinners. Ski drying room very warm so comfy boots every morning!
Cons: Nothing to add here
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Location was great - Food was excellent
Cons: Wifi did not work in rooms only in hotel foyer
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location was great for skiing! Right next to the slopes!
Cons: Accessibility to the nearby village was poor (but that’s because you will be so near the slopes so it is a trade off).
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Amazing location for ski in ski out. That said it was a bit of a hike to the town center for the restaurants and nightlife. The staff were excellent and very helpful even though most of them couldn't speak English.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location is right on the slope so it's true ski in ski out. The facilities at the lodge make for an excellent experience all round. The onsen was amazing after a long day on the hill and the food was delicious and varied. The team were very courteous while also providing privacy during our stay. We absolutely loved our time at Lodge Denbey in the picturesque Nozawaonsen. Thank you once again Tak and the team!
Cons: There's nothing we didn't like, we had an amazing stay on the slope at Lodge Denbey! Thank you to Tak and the team

9.2 Excellent
Pros: Great location for ski school, gondola and 2 lifts with ski in and out access. They offer pick up and drop off to your car/bus or train station. Good breakfast included. My kids loved the bunk beds!
Cons: Be prepared to walk 10-15 mins into town for dinner - we didn’t mind at all as the walk is pretty in the snow. The local restaurants to this property close at 5pm when the lifts stop. You can get skidoo access into town till 5:10pm
8.3 Excellent
Pros: Excellent location on the mountain for skiing, right near the hikage gondola and rental shops. Decent breakfast everyone morning. Hotel was very warm and cozy too, I was very comfortable hiding here in the night through some harsh winds and snow.
Cons: A bit far from the town, but that’s what you trade if you want on mountain accommodation. Just be aware the Yu Road closes from 5pm, so if you want dinner in town you need to catch that down or you have to walk down. And then after dinner eitherway you’ll need to hike back up. It was doable just be aware. Dinner is available most nights at the hotel though if you don’t want to go into town. My bed was a little hard as well being a wooden bunk. That’s pretty normal for japan though and I just did a double mattress which helped.
7.1 Good
Pros: Location. The Onsen in the basement
Cons: The 3 days we were there they never provided plates/utensils for our 2 yr old son for breakfast or the one dinner we had there.... my husband was disappointed that our son was never acknowledged as a person there just because he’s staying for free for under 3 yr old. It had not happened else where. The other places we stayed at on this 1 month trip in Japan had always set up for 2 adjusts and 1 kid even though they rarely provided more food but that was acceptable. Food was at best so so. Not something we looked forward to every morning. Luckily there’s a nice restaurant nearby that we went for consecutive nights. Highly recommend Schneider. People there were not particularly warm. The old male owner who sits behind the counter had not smiled once or said hi back after we said hi... The old lady also didn’t smile much. It felt like they were running a very tight ship there cuz the staff were also quite stiff. Couple of them were more interactive which made the place more tolerable. The location is great. If you don’t care about food or interactions with the Staff which in our case is important with a young kid then it’s not so bad.
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The staff and location were excellent. The rooms and amenities were very clean and well serviced.
Cons: The breakfast was very good and varied each day but the servings were about half what I would normally have and I'm not a big person.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Suburb location, super friendly staff and excellent value for money
Cons: No Japanese breakfast offered only western style breakfast
9.2 Excellent
Pros: Super clean, fantastic location!! Literally right next door to the gondola! Delicious breakfast and friendly staff.
Cons: The pillows were really uncomfortable.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing service, super friendly and clean. Ultimate ski in -ski out location. We didn’t mind the 15 min walk back to the lodge from the village after dinner - through a gorgeous winter forest. Helped us walk off all the delicious food.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great spot, right by the Gondola. Great breky and the endless supply of good coffee.Staff were great and very helpful. The pick up from the bus depot was a bonus.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything!! Tannhof is such an amazing place. Shoko and all of the staff were so lovely and helpful. The location is epic! A short walk (or skate on the board) to Hikage gondola and being located right on a ski run it really is ski-to-door. Great breakfast and coffee. Secure dry room. Relaxing hot Onsen. There are so many wonderful qualities to this place! We can’t wait to stay here again!
Cons: Leaving.
7.9 Good
Pros: Ski in/out was very good. Every thing was clean and tidy. Shared bathroom/toilets clean and well maintained. Shower room and hot bath available 24/7 which is a bonus. Staff spoke enough English to be very useful. The breakfast was adequate, but with mostly Westerners staying, perhaps a choice of Western cuisine might be an improvement, simple things like toast, hot eggs etc. Overall however the experience was pleasant.
Cons: This comment does not apply directly to our accomodation host in particular. Didn't enjoy vehicles with empty seats passing by and not offering a ride back up the snow covered quite lengthy road when they were in a position to provide a seat/ride back to the accomodation area. Only one driver/vehicle did stop and do so. Interestingly that individual was a Westerner and aware of the hospitality other westerners would expect to give and or receive. Providing this kindness (which in reality is at no expense to the operator of the vehicle) should be considered usual and normal, particularly during adverse weather (heavy snow or rain, wind) which we experienced. Bunk bed mattress is far too thin for western people, even though in my instance, I am very used to sleeping on a futon and have done so many times.
