Pros: Location and the views.
Cons: Our dinner at the restaurant was just ok.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel and facilities were great, but the weather was very windy, we were not we prepared for it! So we couldn’t enjoy the hotel, we had to spend the whole time in the room.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great location and great food
Cons: Security did not know what time the pool and hot tub closed. We got back from a 3 hour night walking tour at 9:30pm and was looking forward to getting in the pool and hot tub to relax but security guard told us it was closed when in fact the posted time on the wall stated 10pm
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Great hotel great location walking to town on bus route to cloud forest . Heated pool and hot tub which is a bonus in this area as it’s cool most of the time.
Cons: The walls were a bit thin could hear people walking outside slamming doors
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked the grounds and the pool layouts. The bar service was excellent and the happy hour drinks good as well. The restaurant was good although the live music was missing due to an unexpected illness. My wife really enjoyed a massage and facial. The desk person recommended her sister as a guide and we saw several quetzels on the tour. EXCELLENT!!!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location. Wonderful staff (who spoke very good English). Delicious breakfast. Easy walk to Santa Elena center and short drive to Monteverde. Tours easily pick up from the hotel too.
Cons: Parking was a bit tight.

Pros: very welcoming reception team great pools high standard throughout .food was great and a good choice
El Establo Mountain Hotel - Monteverde - Outdoor view

9.1 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is beautiful! The view is amazing especially from the upper buildings where you can see all the way over the mountains to the the gulf and to guanacoste in the distance. The rooms were very nice and very comfortable beds and very clean. They have their own hiking trails at the top and it was wonderful to hike at our leisure through the cloud forest. They have their own zip line but we did not try it, but it seemed a nice quiet option compared to others. We saw lots of wildlife right there at the lobby and the dinner at the restraint was amazing! We talked about it the rest of our trip! And service in the restaraunt combined with the atmosphere definitely makes it a fine dining experience. The hotel is also a nice distance from town. The amenities are very nice. We would consider staying here again.
Cons: The only negatives to this hotel were actually minor ones that would have just made it a more perfect experience overall. The fact that it is in such a large area they use shuttles to take you from one location to another. It is extremely steep and long to walk/hike especially to upper buildings with the beautiful view, so the shuttle is almost mandatory unless you are in excellent shape. They are more than happy to shuttle and most times are timely except there were a couple of times that we needed to wait up to 15 minutes for the shuttle. Otherwise the shuttle service was very good. The breakfast buffet was very nice but the view from the big beautiful window is the staff parking lot and bushes. It was a shame it didn't have a view, but I suppose you can't always have the exceptional view. The family pool/workout area was very nice and under an open canopy. The pool was a somewhat comfortable temperature but it was very cold with the night mountain air blowing in and there was no hot tub which could have made it a nicer experience.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful location. We had a gorgeous view of the mountains and the sunset. A short drive to town and about 20 minutes drive to the cloud forest. The complex itself is huge and has a lot to offer, unfortunately we only stayed for the 1 night so we didn't use most of amenities.
Cons: The only problem was the lack of parking at our individual building-there were only 3 spots for a building that had upwards of 30 rooms. We had to park at another building, that wasn't super close.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The view is amazing, room was beautiful with vaulted ceilings; the view from anywhere on the property is amazing; staff was friendly, food was good- no complaints- the resort is on a steep hillside, it's really not an issue ( 40 second drive from the bottom or 3-5 min slow walk to our room 3/4 of the way up the property) -shower is like niagra falls and as hot as you can stand- my wife had no complaints and that is amazing - two thumbs up from Santa barbara ca.
Cons: The Grass was too green, too many rainbows in the distance , sky was too blue, Saw too much ocean From our deck/ lanai :) Our girls had too much fun ( 4 and 7 ) - the room was too big Don't hesitate, go. I've stayed in some pretty nice places and this one won't disappoint, despite a few reviews I read before going ( I'm still spoiled living in Santa barbara ca and have some reasonable expectations, my wife on the other hand sets the bar very high and had no complaints which was shocking- even she was shocked when she said it )
9.0 Excellent
Pros: El Estable Mountain Hotel is a huge resort covering a full hill on at least 9 levels. We stayed at 4. They actually have free taxi inside the resort so that you can easily reach your room. The location provides all the amenities you would want from a resort. The rooms are large and confortable. The breakfast is amazing. The restaurant overall is ok, but you must try also the restaurant from the city center. In clear days from at least 3rd level and above you have a beautiful view over the whole valley until the ocean. There was a mix-up with the rooms and they provided us a junior suite instead of a larger suite. The next day we went to the reception and agreed with then that we won't change the room and they provided us a 10% to the full payment that we had at their restaurant.
Cons: Furniture is a little bit dated in the rooms, but it was no problem for us. City center is ~20-30min walk away, mentioning this because for some might be too far.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: View from the room was spectacular ( Rooms in block 700)
Cons: Room was not well isolated. We could hear the neighbours way to well.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: Unbelievable views, fabulous attentive staff. Lovely rooms that are quite spacious.
Cons: You can hear the room next to you if the tv is on.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The grounds are beautiful. Awesome views. Good jungle trails. You can even zip-line on the premises. Rooms are large, well furnished and clean.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Amazing views, excellent staff, awesome amenities
8.0 Excellent
Cons: Problem with handicap parking from check in. Could not get to room for more than half hour due to tour bus blocking lot. Reception said they checked in before you. Nearly every time we tried to come or go a bus was in the way.
7.9 Good
Pros: Fabulous views. Restaurant food and breakfast was very good. Friendly staff at reception and restaurant.
Cons: Many tour groups stay there so it is quite busy at times. We were touring on our own. Maid knocked on the door at 7:30 am to clean the room both mornings. We were still sound asleep. Bed linens were tired looking. Some of the walkways needed better lighting at night.
4.2 Okay
Pros: Location
Cons: Old, no decoration, no equipment in the room not even a glass in the bathroom...no amenities at all, not even WiFi in the rooms

10.0 Excellent
Pros: This is a beautiful hotel, the room was clean and had an amazing view. The restaurant was amazing and the food really good.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful view from the hotel bar, lovely room and comfy bed. Friendly staff. Lovely jacuzzi.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel with lots of character. Enjoyed complementary coffee every day on the balcony in the juice bar and cocktails watching the sun set on the balcony of the bar and restaurant.
Cons: Room became very noisy at night because of the wind.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Farm to Table restaurant is great. Though would be nice to include a breakfast at least. Got a great B&B cabin feel, walk out to the balcony and teleport into Costa Rica's famous cloud forest. Get up early in the morning and catch all the birds waking up and do what they do best.
Cons: Cleaning could be a bit more meticulous. It's nice place for a romantic spot. Thought it is on the higher spectrum of price point for attempting to maintain the boutique aspect. Being it the off-season there is some extra's to be longing for. I'm glad I didn't run into any of the "snobs" this place could possibly attract. Though always go in with minimal expectation and go with your gut feeling. Pura Vida!
8.8 Excellent
Pros: The location was great . View from the room is outstanding.
Cons: Not much to do on the property itself ( for my liking), I am sure whoever wanted to just stay , relax and do nothing - will find this hotel a perfect place .
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The location in nature. The view from the room. The help and friendliness of reception staff.
Monteverde Lodge & Gardens - Monteverde - Building

Featured amenities include a computer station, dry cleaning/laundry services, and luggage storage. 8.0 Excellent
Pros: Great location and beautiful hotel. The gardens and trails on site were lovely. The restaurant on site also had good food and a very good very breakfast. Good affordable drinks. It was nicely decorated and had a good natural and modern feel to it. There were many restaurants and shops within walking distance.
Cons: Very overpriced. If you leave a light on in your room and do not close the curtains bugs will try and most likely get in, but hey you are in the jungle (even with the screen door shut).
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The grounds a beautiful and you are truly immersed in Monteverde’s spectacular ecosystems. The property is rustic, but welcoming and still luxurious. The restaurant is delicious, if on the more expensive side for the area. Not to be missed: both the pool and butterfly garden.
7.9 Good
Pros: The food is very good, the portions are small. The prices are high. Internet was very good. Staff very charming. Garden is beautiful.
Cons: Price value is not correct. We expect a very good room for US$ 382.—!!! Breakfast is very limited, no buffet, again for the price not correct.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: We liked the location and the staff were very helpful with answering your questions and/or with booking any tours you might want to go on. We liked the meals and drinks served in the restaurant and sitting by its cozy, warm fireplace after a long day!
Cons: The beds in the room with double beds were not very comfortable and rather short length wise for sleeping on. I’m 5’9” and by boyfriend is 6’2.” The walls are paper thin and noise can be a factor.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The rooms and gardens are lovely. The staff treated us to a private dining experience in the butterfly garden! Made us feel special.
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Restaurant food and drinks of high quality. Amazing location with its own nature trails. Very clean. Great service from staff.
Cons: Dated bathroom and small beds
6.7 Good
Pros: We had an upstairs room with a small balcony which was clean and comfortable. The pool was nice and the front desk staff was friendly. The food in the restaurant was good.
Cons: I’ve never written a negative review before, but this property in general looks tired and the feeling is not genuine or welcoming at all compared to all the other places we stayed in our 3 1/2 week trip to Costa Rica. For that reason, we found it totally overpriced and not a good value. When you pull into the entrance parking, large signs warn you of potential theft if you leave anything in your car. In the bath, there is a snarky printed sign telling you to use plastic water bottles if you want to “support the plastic industry”. Both those messages could be conveyed, as they are at many hotels around the country, in a much more pleasant and professional way. When we wanted to have lunch on a deck outside where a nice sign invited you to order your lunch to be delivered there, the surly guy in the restaurant acted like it was a complete mystery what we were talking about. At breakfast half an hour before they stopped serving, staff was already stacking chairs at the tables right next to us and we had to keep asking for coffee rather than being offered it. The whole place had a feeling of being jaded and no longer trying....it seems like the kind of place you go to to experience none of the culture of Costa Rica, only jaded employees (with the exception of the front desk) who speak English. It seemed to us that Costa Rica Expeditions is riding on their laurels... Monteverde gets crowds regardless of facilities or service so no need to go above and beyond (or even be polite in some cases). Additionally, we saw a Costa Rica Expeditions van near Tenorio National Park where the driver/guide was whistling (like an eagle) to get a 3-toed sloth to move.... completely environmentally unacceptable and disappointing from a company that bills itself as environmentally sensitive. A disappointment and we would not return.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Food was excellent! Enjoyed the meal choices, Fresh juices and Delicious coffee.
Cons: Can't think of a thing wrong with this beautiful stay.

6.7 Good
Pros: We were put in a tiny room, extremely tight with poor WiFi. They switched us to a much larger room upon request. Breakfast was good. The setting of the entire hotel feels like you are in the nature, as part of the Cloud Forrest Reserve.
Cons: The room didn’t have dehumidifier. It got cold since we are in the cloud Forrest. The rooms were outdated.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very friedly, and all family loved the the pool, jacuzzi and breakfast. Located in a very quiet area. Overall, very good price for the value
Cons: The showers need maintenance, both in the bedroom and pool
5.0 Okay
Pros: The breakfast was wonderful, and the restaurant food and service was great. The property and grounds were beautiful. Half price happy hour drinks from the bar were a plus, with great views especially from the upper terrace at sunset. There is a beautiful pool and spa area also with a bar, and monkeys and birds easily seen on the property. Also, it is close (walking distance) to the Cloud Forest Reserve. The staff was very nice, however we were staying for 3 nights (Fri, Sat, and Sun), and when we asked to change to a nicer room, we were told there was no availability for Sat or Sun nights, so we stayed put. The view was nice from our room, but VERY outdated.
Cons: The room (#10) was in desperate need of a renovation and the bed was uncomfortable. Internet was unusable in the room, however the new owners were having work done at the time we were there to help correct this issue. Our standard room was in no way representative of the pictures shown on the property website. There seems to be a very substantial difference between the rooms. We would not have chosen this hotel if we had seen the pictures of the room we were assigned to.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: A real beautiful area in the rainforest near the reserve and shopping
9.2 Excellent
Pros: The property is beautiful. The buildings beautiful wood, comfortable and very large rooms. The staff was outstanding.
Cons: Nothing really. We liked it all.
6.0 Good
Pros: Staff was friendly, helpful, and perhaps the most positive aspect of staying here. Location was good. Not only quiet but in a good location to reach other places. Sports bars had a happy hour which proved to be worthwhile. Pool was large, clean and pleasant. Parking was easy.
Cons: The property was dated, tired and needed some life. The beautiful "formal" bar was 100% dead and entirely devoid of business (cost!) The restaurant was very expensive and uninspiring thus as we had a car we never ate there. Breakfast was ok, the same buffet every day except Saturday where there were just two choices, no explanation was given. Our room, the bath/shower needed to be renovated period, especially for what the room cost per night.
7.0 Good
Pros: The breakfast was excellent! Service was very good. Any questions or issues we had were immediately addressed and resolved to the best of their ability. The location was great with a great view. The pool was nice. It appeared it was under new management and that they were making improvements to their facilities and services to bring it back up to previous standards. It was a good value.
Cons: Changing rooms at the pool had showers but the hot water wasn't turned on. Bathrooms in the rooms were outdated and needed updating in respect to their toilets and showers.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful grounds - you feel like you are in the forest. Fantastic breakfast buffet with made to order eggs and homemade bread & jams. Very friendly staff all around.
Cons: Rooms need better lighting and more electrical outlets. Bathrooms also need more storage or at least some hooks to towels, etc. Wifi was spotty and not strong. Location is outside of town, so you either need a car or plan to take Taxi's around.

9.0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The cabins were not luxurious, but were clean and comfortable with some amenities like fresh coffee. The grounds were beautiful with wonderful hiking trails. The breakfast was absolutely delicious!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything! Rustic and comfortable lodge-type accommodation. You are in the middle of the Cloud Forest up here, just what we expected. Lots of wildlife, monkeys in the fruit trees around the property! Staff friendly and helpful, food and drinks were excellent. The enclosed porch which looks over the Cloud forest is amazing, sat out there and had drinks and played games while we watched a crazy sunset. Did NOT want to leave!
Cons: Nothing not to like, just disappointed that the outdoor part of the porch is currently closed b/c it is unsafe and needs to be re-built. That would not be a deal-breaker for us though, as the view is the same from the enclosed porch.
6.5 Good
Pros: Beautiful garden. Clean and comfortable room despite the humidity.
Cons: No insolation btw cabins, awaken everyday at 6am by our neighbours. Very basic breakfast. Front desk staff very cold and not offering any help or suggestion for the region.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: At first we were concerned as there was no air conditioning but the front desk gave us a fan and all was good. this was a delightful place to stay. So relaxing yet close to everything
Cons: Quiet, good food, close to town, great team
7.0 Good
Pros: Great sunset view combined with nice Happy Hour. Own reserve and walking trails on the property. Breakfast was fine and staff nice.
Cons: Our house 1B was away from the main houses. Unluckily, not a lot of light in the dark. Bathroom very outdated. Room large. Overall the facility seems a little out of date and has seen better times.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: I loved the views they have in the restaurant where we also saw many different birds. Also the different trails you can do on your own in the Area. The staff at the restaurant was really nice
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Bungalows and the entire grounds are beautiful and very well maintained
Cons: If you book a room including breakfast, there should not be additional fees for certain breakfast items such as saussages or bacon! ?? Drinks and food are the most expensive we have seen in Costa Rica.
9.1 Excellent
Pros: Food, area, amenities were great.
Cons: Shower head was crazy, shower did not drain, no tv in room. Gustav was a great waiter and day front desk was wonderful. Night front desk and night waitress lacked personality.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Really nice spacious room in semi detached chalet with little patio and forest view. Nicely kept garden. Frequently visited by forest animals - lovely. Nice forest walks within in the extended property boundary. Zip lines available inside the property (not for us though). Food was OK, but nice views from the central restaurant facility. Surprisingly cool, even in February, needed a jumper/cardigan and/or coat. Birds in the area were superb. A little outside (1.5km ?) Montaverde/St Elena on a roughish unpaved road. Need a car to visit the small town and its adequate restaurants.
Cons: Nothing, the property was excellent. We found ourselves a little bored after bird watching but the forest walks helped.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was good but the toasts were very hard. The coffee was excellent! The location was perfect. Lovely grounds and the choices for the supper menu were excellent.
Cons: Very cold in the room. A heater would be beneficial. It was only 19 Celsius and with the high winds it was very cold in the room. We hardly slept.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We stayed at a end unit king room with private patio and garden view. It was very quiet yet close to the reception and restaurant. The staff was very helpful informing about tours and arranging for the next day. The restaurant / bar area has a gorgeous view, great for enjoying a cocktail during happy hour before a delicious meal. All staff was very friendly. Very good value, the location is not in town and quiet yet close to everything. Highly recommended!

Pros: This Inn deserves its rating. It has a stunning location and view. The staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the hammock garden, the restaurant and the night hike. However, be aware that you are a 20 minute walk to town. Great place to chill.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We loved everything about this place-The most breathtaking view to be had! Beautiful trails, a waterfall, a hammock garden. The cafe, delicious food and very well priced! The grow so much of their own offerings on site. A beautiful outdoor fire pit, croquet, bikes, frisbee, and soccer balls. Much to do for families but also an opportunity for peace and quiet. We would have loved to spend more time here. Bring a coat, sweater, and pants, we did not bring warm enough clothes.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was great, the view is amazing and the relaxed feel at this place is wonderful,
Cons: Nothing
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Truly unique and memorable experience. The property is gorgeous - the view and trails are remarkable. The permaculture environment is highly admirable, and the staff are amazing. It really feels like a micro self sustaining village. The restaurant is also very good. I highly recommend staying at least 2 days here while in Monteverde. It’s a welcoming contrast from the typical hotel chain experience.
Cons: Only thing I would suggest is to have the lightbulbs replaced with LED or a more eco-friendly alternative, considering the nature of the property, I was surprised they were still using incandescent bulbs.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: The outdoor space was exceptional, our two children loved playing on the large grassy area. The sunset vista was spectacular. The wood fired pizzas and breakfasts were delicious.
7.9 Good
Pros: Location: beautiful views over looking the rainforest out to the sea. A good 20 minute walk into town, up some steep roads. Walkable to rain Forrest. The staff were super helpful and polite. Gave you all the information you needed upon check in. Great ethos with sustainable living and eco friendly.
Cons: My only complaint is The room we had was slightly small for two grown men. We did the night tour which was good however I think the price was a bit steep for what it was.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place to stay, eat and enjoy local artisan beers....wild life all around, great short trails to explore the property, some good tours if this is your style....staff was very friendly and polite...clean....minutes away from the butterfly garden... lovely sunrise and sunset...we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay and relax.
Cons: Road to Monteverde Inn Is rough as it is not concrete, just gravel..but this was the case for many parts of Monteverde area and sight seeings..The road down to the Monteverde Inn is steep....so if you want to walk back to Santa Helena is a very steep road up. A couple of cockroaches in the bathroom...thank God the small type...
5.0 Okay
Pros: View was outstanding.
Cons: It appeared like possibly 2 sections & we may have been in an older section. Appeared like mold in the shower. Wifi poor. The ceiling was very low in the kitchen area. On arrival they try to sell you tours etc. After travelling the day I really just wanted to go to my room & rest. Overall outside of the sunset view it was disappointing.

Cons: Rooms a bit dated.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Room was huge! (we had 5 people) Beds comfortable. Beautiful hotel in location very close to town. Would definitely recommend. Came in late and there was still (monitored) parking. Good breakfast, friendly.
Cons: parking a little tight.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: friendly staff; beautiful gardens, cute dog named Bella
Cons: lighting in the rooms - very dark. No shelving in the bathroom, though there is lots of room for it.
7.0 Good
Pros: The grounds of the hotel was nice. The food was good. The staff accommodating.
Cons: The bed is hard.
6.8 Good
Pros: The hotel itself is beautiful, the landscaping is breathtaking and it's really quite wonderful.
Cons: The walls are EXTREMELY thin. You can hear someone sneeze. No exaggeration. I'd bring ear plugs or try and make sure no ones next to you.
6.3 Good
Pros: Staff was attentive and very friendly and breakfast was good. The room had a safe. Room consisted of a bed, a large desk table to put things on, a small round table and two chairs.
Cons: The room was not well maintained; paint and walls peeling and discolored. Pillows were uncomfortable and plastic lined like hospital pillows. Parking was very limited and tricky.
8.5 Excellent
Pros: Ease of parking. Friendly staff. Good breakfast. Proximity to Santa Elena (5-10min walk).
Cons: Towels didn't smell great. Hot water in the shower was sporadic. Having a mini fridge would be nice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I came to Monteverde just for the ziplining and hanging bridges at Selvatura Park. This hotel was in a great location to go there by rented car. The hotel includes a great typical breakfast every morning. The rooms are quiet and the beds are comfortable. Not many luxuries, but it's a great place to sleep and shower.
Cons: If you use google maps for directions to this hotel, the last street it has you turn on before reaching the hotel is very steep with dirt and loose gravel. It was pouring rain when we arrived so my two wheel drive SUV had trouble making it up. Would have been no trouble with a 4x4 vehicle, but even then I would go around and use one of the other streets to get to the hotel.
4.2 Okay
Pros: hotel facilites, as well as breakfast was great
Cons: the clerk at the front desk was often unkowledgable about local acitivies, and we even had to call our previous hotel's front desk to arrange our monteverde activites. at other times, the clerks were misinformed and gave ur factually incorrect information

Pros: Randall our host was exceptional. He made us feel like we were family. We will go back.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The owners are gracious hosts. We enjoyed the walk along a forest path to get to our room, which was spacious and had a fantastic view.
Cons: I worry about the environmental impact of the growing number of tourist accomodations.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful. As soon as we arrived he helped us book the tours and park entrances. His wife also cooked us a meal when the restaurant was closed because we hadn’t eaten lunch and the nearby restaurants were closed. The bungalows are very big and clean with comfortable beds, a good shower and beautiful views. All of the food in the restaurant was really delicious. We could not recommend Belcruz more. The family are so kind and friendly and welcoming and made our stay perfect.
Cons: Nothing - it was perfect
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent breakfast, the view from the room is amazing. The room is very comfortable and clean. The owners are very friendly nice people. The hotel is located in the middle of nature and you can see lots of birds.
Cons: The location of the hotel is a little far from Santa Elena so you have to drive on a road that is not paved and the restaurants are in town. The rooms don't have TV and the hotel doesn't have any activity to spend the night. So you feel that you need to watch tv.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: I would highly recommend Belcruz B&B to anyone traveling to the Monteverde area. Our room was spacious and spotless. It was just two of us but there were two rooms that could easily accommodate 4 people. The owner put a lot of time and thought into the landscaping and property. I enjoyed the little hike between the rooms and the restaurant. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. My favorites were the homade granola and jam. The hospitality of the owner was some of the best I've encountered anywhere. He was genuinely happy to have us there and went out of his way to accommodate. A great value overall. I will stay here again if I return to the area.
Cons: No complaints.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful view, very quiet and peaceful location. Friendly hosts. Enjoyed waking up to the sounds of birds and walking to breakfast through the woods.
Cons: Wifi didn't always work in room. Shower water wasn't quite hot (but this might be typical for the area).
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Excellent place! Its like a hidden gem! Family which owns are very kind, location is super nice, view of the balcony amazing, and they organize all the tours for us - cheaper then the tour offices. I wonder how it is not yet beeing listed in #lonelyplanet or any #costarica #reiseführer! As I said - secret amazing place! Our best stay in whole Costa Rica! Muchas Gracias!
Cons: All was perfect!
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The local owners converted their farm to be more wildlife friendly and a place to support tourism in this beautiful area. Randall is very knowledgeable about the area and eager to share. The view from the font porch of the room was awesome when we woke up. We hope to return again when we have more time.
Cons: The water in the shower in our room could have been a little warmer.
9.6 Excellent
Pros: The owner Randall and his family couldn’t have been nicer or more accommodating. The place was clean and comfortable and the price a steal! They also have a restaurant on property that had very good food. Breakfast was included in the price of the room.
Cons: Although hot water and WiFi were advertised neither one worked while we were there but there was WiFi in the restaurant so we used our phones there.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Hosts were extremely friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. The room was simple but very comfortable and clean. It had a great view of a stream ravine. Breakfast was phenomenal: rich and delicious. Nice short trails from the room to the reception (and breakfast) and around the surrounding properties, including a coffee farm.
Cons: Although access from Santa Elena and Monteverde was easy, the road is in bad shape (like most of the roads outside Santa Elena). Driving at night was terrifying as some sections of the road are dangerous (we almost fell down a precipice trying to give way to incoming traffic).
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Secluded rooms, unbelievable stars at night, and wonderful staff.
Cons: Not heat or a/c but really did not need it. Asked for and received an extra blanket.

9.2 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was a little oasis in a very touristy spot - clean, classy and comfortable
5.0 Okay
Pros: The big shower
Cons: The beds were hard, there were brown spots all over the bathroom and not sure what they were. The staff was NOT helpful at all. I asked one person to help me translate something on my phone (in Spanish) and he said he didn’t know?! We also told a staff member there was a giant bug roaming the hall outside our room and asked them to remove it. To which we got the response that “well we are in the forest”. It was also really windy both nights, and it sounded like the roof of the hotel was going to just come right off and it made it really difficult to relax and sleep. And lastly, it was like climbing a mountain taking the path to our room.
7.5 Good
Pros: Location Location Location. Since we had a rental car we weren’t worried about finding places to eat but we wanted to be within walking distance of the trails. Entrance is about 10 minute walk (uphill) from the hotel. Rooms are large and clean.
Cons: Our room smelled like disinfectant a lot. Windows open for a few hours took care of that. Although there was hot water, it took about ten minutes for the shower water to warm up and even then it was just on this side of warm. The water pressure barely adequate, and the shower drain was too slow and water leaked out of shower enclosure. A kettle in the room with tea and coffee would be nice.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel was clean. All staff were very friendly and kind and very helpful. It was an excellent location with the most incredible view.
7.0 Good
Cons: The menu for dinner and lunch was limited. 2 or 3 meals was more than enough before we needed to go elsewhere for a meal.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Wonderful location near the entrance of the park, comfortable rooms, and splendid public spaces. I would definitely recommend staying at this hotel when visiting Monte Verde cloud forest.
Cons: The toilet and shower didn't drain well.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Only one night here to visit the Cloud Forest, Very clean, comfortable hotel with beautiful bedrooms, all with a view.
Cons: Hotel is a long way from town and the food in the on-site restaurant was very limited.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: The lodge is lovely, beautifully designed with lots of native wood, tiles, excellent beds and linens. Our room overlooked a pretty garden and the forest. We also had an "atrium," a porch-like space with big windows. They provided a full breakfast with homemade pastries and baked breads, waffles, fresh fruit and yogurt, and the best eggs I have ever had in my life. The breakfast room was gorgeous, spacious, and overlooked the pretty grass and rainforest. The front desk staff was extremely helpful in offering suggestions for activities, and then in setting them up for us. The restaurant was outstanding - we ate there 3 of the 4 nights of our stay! And the bar was dark, elegant, classy and offered a great happy hour every day with interesting and delicious drinks. The best bartender and waiter was Mauricio - friendly, and a real pro. We loved the Trapp Family Lodge and would stay here again and again.
Cons: The only thing that could have been better is that there wasn't enough clothes storage - no place to hang our clothes and minimal drawer space.

Cons: staff was nice. very nice landscaping.

Pros: Gorgeous property. Clean rooms. Friendly staff. Especially Mario At the front desk, helped us book tours and activities that we really enjoyed.

Pros: Location
Cons: Poor wifi
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast and the attendants were excellent
Cons: Internet access wasn't the best, probably because of the windy weather
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast was amazing, lots of varieties and great service. It also had different set of breads and cakes each day which was fantastic if you want to try different things. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Great service for information and to book tours directly from reception.
Cons: It is understandable that the access to rooms are not that easy as the property is spread out and it obviously a very hilly area so roads and pathways are winding. If you have to walk you have to go across other buildings and rooms.
6.0 Good
Pros: I liked the sunset views from the property, the garden, breakfast and the breakfast personell.
Cons: I did not like the noise of the construction next to my room and the clogged shower. Reception gives minimum information about anything. If you arrive in the evening you will for sure be lost. Parking is devided over four different levels with different road entries. Confusing and frustrating.

6.0 Good
Pros: The staff was very courteous and helpful. They had a breakfast included that was excellent with a nice variety of different things each day. Breakfast could be had indoors or out on a patio with a nice view.
Cons: The beds were very hard and uncomfortable, and amounted to a mattress on a frame that had no box spring. There were no comfortable chairs or a patio one could sit out on, unless you went over the the main building. Our room was in the building next to the main building and it looked it had been hastily sided with with aluminum siding and a tin roof. Although there is a view, the windows can not be opened making the place a greenhouse without any vents; there wasn't even a bathroom exhaust and it was obvious the place was not insulated. So with no air conditioning, and unable to even open a window, and only a single floor stand fan the place was unbearable in the daytime. Before returning from our days activities we had to open the door and position the fan to blow in as much cool air as we could. With some improvements on the issues I've mentioned it could be a nice place. The room itself was low on the scale of what I'd call "the basics."
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Location close to centre. Service ist very good and reception staff can give you every information needed. Big kitchen, well equipped. Lots if hammocks and other chilling areas on the whole property. The even have security personal for the night. Nice breakfast included and the view is awesome.
Cons: Double room was underneath the shared doorm room and therefore especially in the morning and evening loud. There are other rooms that might be more quiet within the hostel.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: breakfast limited- different menus each day- coffee always good, fruit good but items missing for ME were eggs (had scrambled pre-prepared once in stay) and whole wheat toast- 10 years ago when I was there different- now very formalized, you need to wear a 'bracelet to confirm you are a hostal guest and menu offerings limited- however, all ok- fresh fruit, good service, everyone pleasant- staff and guests. And the breakfast is still FREE!
Cons: lighting in shared dorm room inadequate for needs of individual guests- one big light overhead and unfortunately light switch located downstairs in bathroom/common area- sometimes that overhead light turned off- made it difficult to function, find way to stairs leading down to the bano or back to your bunk bed. Sometimes someone had to see their way to their bunk bed and of course had to turn on the overhead big light- which could be disturbing to others trying to sleep. I was in a hostel in San Jose (TripOn Open House) where they'd installed individual lights/switches/plugs for recharging devices in each bunk bed space and each bunk bed space also had an individual curtain you could open and close, providing privacy and control of your tiny space. Cabinas should consider that- of course it would cost some $ but it would make hostelers happier and safer given that current situation does not provide adequate lighting with switches conveniently located on same floor where dorm beds are located (bathroom sinks, toilets, showers on first floor and at the entrance way to dorm. Otherwise I liked everything- and mostly the staff- all professionals, all have been there for years and years, all committed to making Cabinas a comfortable, safe place for travelers. Also almost all staff speak ingles (at least at reception area) and they provide lots of good information, book tours, reservations for shuttles, etc. Was last in Monteverde Santa elena 10 years ago- and still my favorite place to stay.
7.0 Good
Pros: Big comfy beds with privacy curtains. Great kitchen for guests to use. Location is a little outside of the main town but totally walkable and quiet - little traffic and no noise at night. Really helpful with tours and shuttles and they offer small discounts ($5) if you book through them rather than directly.
Cons: Needing to book your breakfast time in advance and only having breakfast available for an hour each day was weird. It's mostly private rooms - there isn't really a common area and as such it's not particularly social. The water is only lukewarm.
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Great place to stay
10.0 Excellent
Pros: We had the doubleroom with kitchen. Clean space, great view, friendly staff. Windy, but not cold, awesome terrace
Cons: Breakfast is at a fix time and no buffet, but it was good
9.7 Excellent
Pros: View, location, cleanliness.
Cons: Breakfast availibility and hammocks weren’t really comfy.

Pros: Impression in general is very good: this is a cosy large hostel with spacious and convenient kitchen (free unlimited water, tea and coffee!), small apartments and super friendly and helpful owners. Location close to bus stop and downtown. Owners have all the information about national parks and can organize you all tours and transfers.
Cons: Internet very slow, in the room it actually does not work. Room was extremely small (but good enough for this price).
9.0 Excellent
Pros: Nice place with hipsterish touch. Great value for money, very friendly staff and very good breakfast. It is located in centre so you have a lot of eating and shopping options just in a few minutes walking distance.
5.0 Okay
Cons: The woman owner was rude, unkind, and nickel and dimes people.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The customer service is primo. The coffee is from the family farm.
Cons: The shower never got hot.
8.0 Excellent
Pros: The breakfast was really good. I appreciated that. The room and the kitchen were clean. The staff friendly.
Cons: Communication difficult because I don’t speak Spanish and the caretaker didn’t spoke English.
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Lovely, friendly staff who helped us to book our activities. Great communal area and garden. Large kitchen with all the utensils you'd need to cook, including a fridge.
Cons: Close the the road, but a very useful central location
10.0 Excellent
Pros: Check in was simple and fast, helped book some tours during our stay, the rooms were clean. Location was great. Staff was friendly
1.0 Poor
Cons: The staff was not helpful. One of my tours was not booked properly. The owner, Malenny, was just plain rude. She was not helpful in helping to figure out the best mode of transportation to San Jose. And told me that the taxi may or may not come to pick me up at the hotel on the morning I needed to leave for San Jose. And that I could walk to the bus station at 5:00am with all my bags. But didn’t say where the bus station was. The kitchen smelled of cat urine. And the bench area smelled of sewage. Utterly obnoxious. I was supposed to stay one more night but decided to book a night at a different hotel. I travel all over the world and have had nothing but pleasant experiences everywhere. I am not a demanding traveler and am a gracious guest. Even if a place is less than perfect, there is always something of redeeming value about my stay. Nothing redeeming about this place. Unless it’s the last available place in town, you’d be wise to avoid it.

Pros: The rooms were clean and spacious. The whole area is hilly, and the hotel had a lot of stairs and inclines with different buildings to go between. Hard for the older people in our group but good for a little workout!
Cons: The parking was always short but the front desk guy was willing to help you find something. Breakfast options were limited, 4 options of eggs, pancakes or some combination.

Pros: Great location with views from the balcony.
Cons: Breakfast is not very exciting but serviceable.

Pros: Manfred in the office was terrific. Booked us a guide for Monteverde and was efficient checking us in. Breakfast was good.
Cons: Room was a little dark, locking the patio door was tricky and the bathroom was poorly appointed.

Cons: The way to the hotel fr.the center is VERY stop and unpleasant
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Good and hard bed, everything clean, decent breakfast, good coffee bar, helpful stuff who organizes you pick-ups for any excursions
8.0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are very friendly and very helpful with all questions. Offer same day laundry service. The rooms are spacious. Great location, short walk to all restaurants. Shower water was hot and had good pressure but the sliding shower door is in need of repair. We loved this property because the staff were so helpful. They even call and arrange tours for you.
7.0 Good
Pros: Good location in a tourist area close to many attractions.
Cons: Be aware that this area of the country is very windy. The wind howled and shook the building all night. This seems more like a backpacker's hotel, like most of the hotels in the town. Luxurious it is not, but it is clean and safe, and the staff is friendly.
5.0 Okay
Pros: On site parking. General shared kitchen facilities.
Cons: Noisy with traffic and other guests. Small room. Minimal furnishings.

Pros: The location in nature. The view from the room. The help and friendliness of reception staff.
