The inn seems to be run and managed by family members who live and stay just behind the front desk. The staff was very friendly and gave us more pointers on where and how to get around Kyoto. He also told us where to get cheap tempura and 100yen shop.
Staff was very helpful despite the language difference. There is access to kitchen facilities and washer and dryer. It was nice to receive fresh towels daily. It's not as centrally located. Also, it was difficult not being able to bring your suitcase into the room - the alcove was really small.
Just about the only thing this hotel had going for it was its location, within a 10-minute walk of the main railway station On arrival we discovered that we were unable to pay using a credit card unless we went to the sister hotel to do so (not much fun at 10pm, with luggage, tired after a 12-hour flight and 4-hour train journey), although we had been able to book using a credit card. The bedding in the room did not appear to be clean and the futon was extremely thin. The room for breakfast was also used for washing and cleaning teeth by guests staying in an adjacent dorm-type room, which was somewhat off-putting
there was no handwash in the room, and need to pay for indoor sandles.
Upon checking-in, the owner recommended the best transport (telling us the bus number and the fare, which train station to get off, etc) to take to go to the area of our interests. He even tells us other in-places that we should visit and when certain shops are close for us to prepare ourselves. A very friendly and helpful fellow !! My family is tall and big in size....so the tatami room is small for us. We did not mind since it is only one night stay.
Awesome location, along the river that divides a busy/upbeat part of the city and Gion, a historic district. Cleanliness was not high on their priority list, and having a whole room decorated in provocative 80`s Madonna posters did not make me feel at home.
The location was fantastic. On one side it's a more traditional japan but just across the river is downtown Kyoto with lots of shops. Be sure to have a day to bike around the city. It's wonderful to just roam around the streets of kyoto.
Nice hotel, nice location, nice roof louge. They also have a fully kitchen. Highly recommeded. A bug in my room one night... A little scary.
