Top tips for hiring a car in Montpellier
- A hire car is the best, most comfortable way to explore not only Montpellier, but also the surrounding area of the Mediterranean coast in the south of France. A car will let you drive along the coast and access the more secluded beaches that public transportation can’t reach. Hop into the car and visit some of the city’s top attractions, such as the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, or head to Saint Jean de Cuculles, a 30-minute drive away, to try some of the region’s best wine.
- Most of the big car hire agencies, including Avis, Europcar, and Enterprise, can be found at Montpellier–Méditerranée Airport (MPL), which is about 15 minutes away from both the city center and some of the beaches on the Mediterranean coast. Car hire desks are located outside the main terminal building, across from the Arrivals Hall and Business Center. Vehicles should be returned to the car hire parking lot – follow the P6/P8/Car hire signs.
- Navigating Marseille isn’t hard, but be extra careful when maneuvering in some of the narrow streets in the city center. Rue de La Loge is a pedestrian-only street. Pedestrians always have the right of way on crosswalks, so you must stop and wait for them. If you wish to hit the coast, you might want to do so on the weekends, as big trucks are not allowed on the roads. Cyclists are common along coastal roads.
- While traffic in Montpellier is manageable, the city does get more crowded during morning rush hour between 6:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and then again between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., so avoid driving within those time frames if possible. Downtown always experiences some congestion and traffic jams are common on the A9 – particularly during summer and on weekends, as more tourists take to the road.

Cons:
I thought all was well when I got on an earlier flight, but Dollar refused to change the time on my car reservation and I could not get the car when I arrived. They insisted I'd have to pay three times the price. After 45 minutes of assistants calling the headquarters and all sorts of other useless jazz, I gave up and rented from someone else.Avis

the car was new. it ran great. very gas efficient. friendly staff, especially when I ran late returning the car, due to weather delays.Cons:
I bought the additional insurance directly from the site and when I got to the rental car company they insisted I buy THEIR insurance. not only did I pay 40% for the insurance, the car wasn't even legally insured there. secondly, the rental car company was severely overbooked. when I got there, there was only one car left which they gave me. the car I rented online was supposed to be big enough for "two luggages" and they one I got barely fit one. I was lucky enought to leave with a car, as the person who came in behind me left very angry without one.Rent@Car
