Staff was friendly.
I was over charged $30 for a Guest amenity fee. This was not in my reservation and I didn’t not use any room items. I was told during check-in that my credit card would be charged for amenities but then taking off if I didn’t use anything. I am not sure why there was an additional charge. I was not told this when I checked out and I only discovered it after I was emailed my receipt. Very disappointing!
Saved by The Firefly
I was in DC for meetings on the weekend and the rate at the Madera was quite reasonable considering the other rates around the city. It’s a good location with a quick taxi and short walk (if you choose) to a lot of the main sites. The room was sizable, and the beds were comfy. The crown jewel of the place is the underrated Firefly restaurant, Lily and the staff there, along their massively talented bartender Brendan Ambrose who’s created a bar program that should be earning much more notoriety than it is (but he likes it that way).
I’ve started falling out of love with Kimpton properties of late. The chain started off with a lot of promise and some very nice touches to personalize a stay, but the free wine happy hours are starting to be overshadowed by the absurdly dank and musty smell of the rooms, especially mine at the Madera. My room also featured a TINY shower and toilet area for the considerable size of the room, an unkempt closet, and clear packing tape holding together the warped wallpaper in a section of the room. This is by far not what I’ve expected and enjoyed from Kimpton properties in the past, but is starting to become the norm.

Halls smelled musty. Wi-Fi isn't free. Parking is outrageously expensive, very limited coffee and wine hours,I think it's more of an afterthought. It felt like an economy experience.
The Hotel Madera was perfectly located for walking as well as catching the Dupont Circle Metro stop. Lots of nearby shops and restaurants. Rooms were clean and spacious. The entire hotel staff was friendly, helpful, and accommodating.

Balcony door was broken, and no one came to see it despite my attempts to have it fixed. Very unsafe and unprofessional.

Large room but tiny bathroom
- Spacious room with nice modern design. Friendly staff. - Wonderful food from room service, provided by the restaurant next door Firefly.
- Tiny tinny bathroom. We expected small bathroom after reading the reviews but didn't expect that you could hardly close the bathroom door if someone is sitting on the toilet. - Weak Wi-Fi signals in my room and it's not free. The hotel did graciously refund the Wi-Fi charges after our complaint. - Lower floor rooms facing the street could get noisy at night due to foot traffic and restaurant activities.
The front desk staff was very friendly, and rooms are beautiful! I liked the walk ability of the area, with a little stretch to walk to Georgetown or the mall before returning to a luxe lobby and beautiful room.
