When to book a rental car in Tel Aviv
Top tips for renting a car in Tel Aviv
- Book a hire car when going on a trip to the second most populous city in Israel to be able to explore every corner of Tel Aviv. With a hire car, travelers can enjoy the wonderful beaches of the city but also drive into Jerusalem, which is just over an hour’s drive away.
- Ben Gurion Airport is 15 miles from Tel Aviv’s center, so the easiest way is to rent a car directly at the airport and drive into the center in under half an hour via Route 1. All hire car desks are located in the arrivals hall on the first floor and cars from companies like Avis, Hertz, and Europcar can be rented, among some others. Note that an international driver’s license is required.
- Driving in Israel is generally not an intimidating affair and most street signs are trilingual in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Honking is pretty common in Tel Aviv and drivers will use it more frequently, often to show their annoyance or impatience. It is advised to remain in the right lane if driving under the speed limit, and changing lanes may require a bit more aggressive driving behavior than travelers are used to from home.
- Using a mobile phone during driving is an absolute no-go in Tel Aviv, even if stopped at a red traffic light. Many accidents in the city are caused by people using mobile phones, and people are fined accordingly high for this -- so refrain from using your mobile phone and, if you need navigation, either ask a fellow passenger to help you or pay a little extra for a satnav holder. As traffic increases dramatically during rush hours (which are from Sunday to Thursday from 7-10 am and 4:30-6:30 pm), high attention to the road is recommended.

Since the city can be bursting with traffic during rush hour, changing lanes can be a challenge, and parking spots are hard to get by, opting for a compact car is a good choice. A smaller car will also cost less and won’t need as much gas.
Speed limit signs are given in kilometers per hour. Urban areas allow up to 50 km/h (31 mph), and 80-90 km/h (49-55 mph) is permitted on intercity roads. On highways, drivers can speed up to 100-110 km/h (62-68 mph). Speed cameras are also common in Israel, so adhering to the speed limit is important.
A refill in Israel will cost about 6.69 Israeli new shekel per liter ($1.79 per ¼ gallon, or $7.16 per gallon). Almost all petrol stations ask for the same price, so it is not necessary to hunt down the cheapest places to refill the tank. When opting for self-service, the price can be marginally cheaper. Usually all major credit cards are accepted.
Parking in Tel Aviv can be a challenge, so familiarize yourself with the color-coded parking areas beforehand. Red signifies parking is not permitted and blue or white means it is a metered parking area. Many on-street parking spots are also reserved for locals, so it’s probably better to opt for a parking lot or parking garage instead, like the Dizengoff Center parking lot or Suzanne Dellal Parking. In Reading in the north of Tel Aviv, there is a free parking lot from which buses can be taken into the center.
